Rescue services had to approach the scene going the wrong way up the hill due to a long tailback on the road leading to the hill.

The driver of the sugar truck Akkraphan was rescued but had multiple burns.

The other drivers involved had only minor injuries. All were taken to Na Dee Hospital.

The pick-up driver Khamphee told the media that the truck had had a brake failure coming down the hill. It had come from Roi-Et and was on its way to Laem Chabang, reported Daily News

I thought not again brake failure.... But I googled this it not just Thailand....Brake failure is a terrifying idea, but it fortunately doesn't happen very often. In fact, brake failures only cause about 5% of the car crashes in the US every year. Of course, there are 5.6 million car crashes in America every year, so brake failure accounts for about about 300,000 crashes per year.De

Thais should be banned from hills and curves. I'm guessing brake fade/leaky hub oil seals , to lazy to change down a gear,  air brakes should not 'fail' it is the air pressure that keeps the brakes off, when there is low pressure the brakes come on audio warning. But watching HGV being tested here, no steering check, no low air buzzer checked, no load applied when on a rolling road brake test. etc. etc.

I suspect when they state brake failure on a hill, they mean ‘over heated’…. & turn failed…. i.e. terrible driving of overloaded vehicles.

Not an uncommon  occurrence with big trucks. Why they often have “runaway truck” ramps on long steep slopes in the US. Preventative maintenance is probably a big factor here.
An acquaintance in the US got his one million mile accident free logged miles award. Wonder if anyone in Thailand ever did that..

The accident is pictured with the vehicles on the right hand side of the dual carriageway which leads me to believe the vehicles were travelling uphill. Therefore brakes should not have been needed durh    ????

Going down these mountains in a big truck one must use the lowest gear and apply “air brakes” accordingly!

Inexperienced drivers , faulty brakes due to air loss could be the cause.

Scary

But this accident happened on the right hand side of the dual carriageway which is going uphill. The truck on the left of the picture is going downhill. No sign of any truck having gone through the concrete central barrier.

I was going to say what an excellent idea....then recalled 80% of all accidents over the holiday period were on straight roads in good weather....555
