Why not, if anyone is ready to pay for it?   In my neighborhood quite a few policemen in uniforms double as shopping mall and gold shop guards.

Why not? Well maybe the police could spend their time policing instead. The biggest problem in Thai society is it's corrupt and lazy police force. Not rocket science, is it?

Yesterday the media referred to "transferred police officers" which today seems to be not (no longer?) the case.

Nobody has to "invite the tour operator and the Chinese tourist for questioning over controversial and unauthorised police escorts provided by Thai tourist and traffic police officers. The services were apparently on offer, the customer and the middleman (the tour operator) made use of the services and also paid for the services rendered.
You have to fire all the police involved and, while you're at it, take the immigration officer(s) along, publish names with fingerpointing photos and then you might put the first watergate into this river offering anything between "special services" and outright corruption. Next please!

Not sure just where you're referring to regarding armed uniformed police inside gold shops.  I live in Udon Thani and have never seen an armed uniformed cop inside a gold shop here in Udon or anywhere in Thailand.  However, I have seen unarmed private security personnel from time to time in the gold shops in the city as well as the Lotus Extra which has a couple of gold shops.

You need to get out more.

HaHa, yep, the Police are honest to a fault and entirely trustworthy.  It's you that needs to understand my friend.

As a Thai, I think I know more than someone who has been a member here for 1 year, and maybe doesn't even live here.

I see nothing wrong if the police are off duty and not using police resources, like a  motor bike.

They do use police resources though.... They use (or the ones I know about) use two police motorcyclists too...  the stop the traffic at juncitions so they can ride through the traffic without delay.

So... thats kind of whats wrong with it... 1000’s of people delayed a little extra because someone wants to be quicker....

... and.... as is the character of traffic, a small hold up at one point compounds to a larger hold up further back. Most of us at some point have probably been caught up in a traffic jam because someone thought they were more important than everyone else.

policemen have been using their free time and their modified personal vehicles to offer this service, Matichon newspaper said today (Jan. 23).

Modified ?? flashing lights in uniform, armed, and off duty-------again cops breaking the law, nothing to see here, move along.

Wow, a Thai that trusts the Police.  You are a rare breed indeed, in fact I have never met one Thai person who shares that view and I have lived here for a good many years .

NVESTIGATION of a viral video shared by a female Chinese tourist claiming to have paid for police escort from the airplane to the hotel showed that some policemen have been using their free time and their modified personal vehicles to offer this service, Matichon newspaper said today (Jan. 23).

No doubt they're reporting the income earned in their "free time" to the Thai Revenue Dept.
