JetStar, one of the most hated airlines in the world – survey

JetStar flights to Asia PHOTO: More problems with JetStar flights to Asia

By Peter Roche

JetStar, a budget airline owned by Australia’s QANTAS Group, has been ranked as the third most unpopular airline in the world, according to a recent survey conducted by currency exchange service S Money.

The survey analysed thousands of tweets using an AI sentiment tool to determine the most loved and hated airlines worldwide, based on customer opinions expressed on Twitter. JetStar received the third-highest percentage of negative tweets, with 68% of tweets about the airline deemed negative. Other low-cost carriers like Go First and TAP Air Portugal also made the list.

Passengers on flight JQ64 from Ho Chi Minh City to Melbourne this week were left in limbo for hours early on Tuesday after a problem with one of the plane’s doors meant it could not take off. Earlier in the week, furious passengers were stuck on the tarmac in Alice Springs for seven hours. Passengers were confined to the grounded Boeing 787 plane last Sunday with limited food and no in-flight entertainment, complaining they were not allowed to disembark for fresh air.

(As Alice Springs Airport is not an international airport, it had no immigration or customs staff to process internationally arriving passengers)

The Jetstar flight had taken off from Bangkok heading for Melbourne, but it was diverted to Australia’s Northern Territory due to a medical emergency on board.

An electrical fault was detected forcing the plane to wait for a replacement part.

On Wednesday evening, Phuket-GO received this information from a reader…

According to Flight Radar 24 app, the following Dreamliner flights have been cancelled Thursday

• JQ8 from Singapore to Melbourne

• JQ18 from Phuket to Melbourne

• JQ30 from Bangkok to Melbourne

• JQ38 from Denpasar to Sydney was cancelled on Thursday morning

There were also passengers bumped from a JetStar flight from Hawaii back to Australia, and rescheduled days later, because of a ‘mechanical problem’. Only to find out later that they had been rescheduled because of an another flight being overbooked or needing to reschedule other passenger. JetStar lied to the customers about the situation, only to later be caught out.

The problems follow over two months of regular delays, rescheduling and cancellations during Q4 last year with just about every service from Australian ports to Asian ports affected. The same fleet of Boeing 787s was affected.

At the time the airline blamed a shortage of parts and maintenance staff for repairs. The S Money survey indicated that customers were particularly frustrated with JetStar’s sub-optimal service, including grounded or cancelled flights, lost luggage, and long delays. Negative tweets frequently concerned issues of lost and damaged luggage.

The report implies that JetStar needs significant improvements to enhance its reputation among customers.

Furthermore, JetStar topped the list of the most-hated Australian airlines, surpassing even parent-company QANTAS, with 67.5% negative tweets.

The once-loved Australian national airline, QANTAS, has become another victim to a barrage of negative social media publicity over the past year with a string of incidents, strikes, cancellations, alleged price-gouging and big pay cheques to senior staff, tarnishing the ‘flying kangaroos’ formerly untarnished reputation.

Recent incidents of technical problems with the airline’s 787 Dreamliners have left more passengers stranded, causing additional frustration.

JetStar’s unreliability is reflected in the latest BITRE data released by the Department of Transport. The data shows that JetStar consistently underperforms when it comes to getting passengers to their destinations on time, with on-time arrivals at 65.4%, compared to an industry average of 76.7%. In January, JetStar also had the highest rate of flight cancellations at 7.3%, compared to an industry average of 3.1%.

JetStar flies almost daily into Phuket, Bangkok, as well as flights into Thailand via Singapore.

Agreed, some haters want to fly for virtually nothing yet complain when they don'r get 5-star treatment.. As for technical problems, yes they occur sometimes and hold-up flights... that's life.

Rated 3rd worst.  They shopuld be number 1 ,they are the worst ever, and the <deleted> excuses they have.

Was reading elsewhere their 787s have become particularly unreliable. This coupled with a management focused on financial return above everything else and that they and the Qantas group as a whole gutted the operational expertise during the pandemic and you have half an understanding on why things are as they are. And BTW, in a previous life I was in a key role at QF to ready the airline for the JQ sales and operations launches.

An aircraft rarely breaks down standing on the tarmac, they occur during a flight and need to be addressed before the next flight.

Passengers these days seem to have less tolerance of any inconvenience to their day.

Surprised that IATA hasn't shut them [and others] down.

Evidently, international safety/business standards of this nature are given an ignored.

Must admit I get tempted by their fares. I like too the direct flights Melbourne to Bangkok and Phuket. 8 or 9 hours so no big deal.  Have one booked in May about AUD $360 return and similar in August. The flying experience is the same. Last time I flew Thai the seats were as cramped. You get a big meal you don't really want late at night and the odd drink. Prefer to spend it on nice hotels.

Had no problems mainly with Jetstar but to be honest my last trip in August was 3 hours late there and a horrible 7 on the way back. So I may have to learn not to be tempted by the low cost.

Who are numbers 1 & 2?  Finnair gets my vote.

Air Canada gets my vote.  Just go to Trip advisor and read the reviews. And they are

in the business of  losing luggage, cancelling flights with no refunds and blessed by the Canadian

government.  And you can't even sue them as the government has changed the laws to protect

the airlines.  You can see the other Canadian airlines on the list. You have been warned.

Jetstar and Qantas are both going down hill fast. Both companies are driven by greed. Customers and  sevice have become the victims. Latest Qantas profit shows what drives both companies,

Two people  here join the long queue of disgruntled ex customers.

I thought  Qantas were somewhat improved over their past failings.... sounds like I am wrong.

"Other low-cost carriers like ............. TAP Air Portugal also made the list."

TAP is the national Flag Carrier of Portugal and a longstanding full member of Star Alliance.

I am sure they will be delighted to be called a "low-cost carrier"....

I can't really comment on Jetstar, never been on one of their flights, however been on plenty of other LCC's.

Trouble is we all got what we wanted price/mile in real terms has plummeted over the past few decades.

The airline industry is brutal, margins are really tight, basically invest millions in hardware to make pennies.

The industry is littered with airlines that went to the wall

Richard Branson has a great quote;

"The fastest way to make a Millionaire is to be a Billionaire and buy an airline"

I work for an airline, so if you think the passengers have it bad, try being an employee!

But at the end of the day millions more people can now afford to fly half way across the world without taking out a second mortgage.

At the end of the day, it's a few hours of your life, nobody dies, maybe your seat is uncomfortable, or you get delayed, but it was cheap.

So suck it up

Never again.

Having said that they were great about 8 years ago when, if you booked early enough, you could get a very cheap business class fare and no organizational problems. Obviously, if an airline plummets dramatically in 8 years it is time to have a good look at the management.

Because airline staff like you with a sh.. attittude towards customers/passengers,no one in Northamerica or Australia wants to use american or australian airlines.Amazingly arrogant without any good reason

French Bee formerly French Blue has some of the worst reviews I have ever seen. Almost booked them because it was the most affordable fare from SFO to Paris,  non stop for late June.

Luckily I shop around and found a reasonably priced fare from a better reputable airline

It’s more like the chiit customers towards the airline staff. See it all the time, impatient pushy and expecting to be served through the prism of one’s own view. Imagine having to deal with uptight amazingly arrogant customers who think they’re entitled day in and day out.

Have a look first 20,do you see any american or australian airline? Now have a look your atittude and thinking about paying passengers.Last time I had a flight with an american airline(United) was 2013 from LHR-SFO and I really hated it.No idea how Qantas made it into the top 5

The rotten apple didn't fall from the worms infested (Qantas) tree.

My "never again" experience was about 8 years ago. Obviously things have not improved. Hang the expense, I only fly Singapore Airlines to and from Australia!

BA was so bad at one time they even advertised  All their staff had been retrained to put customer service first or words to that effect.I don't know how that worked out.

100% correct, the fruit has absolutelt screwed the once best aIrline in the world.

All the bad publicity for Jetstar will not deter the punters who are always attracted to cheap fares like bees around a honey pot

When is Air Asia going to kick back in (if ever) The only thing that is going to reduce these prices is competition.

I think you have that a***ss backwards.

Most of us do our level best to take care of our passengers.

But people lose their mind when they walk into an airport.

I've been screamed at, cursed at , threatened with physical violence, puked on the list goes on.

We don't run the airline we just work for it.

"I need to be in xxx by tonight, get me on a plane right now you a*hole"

Well madam look outside there is a blizzard no planes are landing.

The days of 60's and 70's are gone.

The airlines have changed, but I'd suggest the traveling public have definitely 'downgraded' also.

And newsflash, contrary to popular myth, we don't have a secret hanger full of reserve aircraft just ready to service you
