March 26, 20232 yr Popular Post Yesterday, a 14 year old on a motorcycle hit my car. I was turning right, had the turn signal on well in advance and the motorcycle decided to pass me on the right. Their excuse was "why were you driving on the correct side of the road if you wanted to turn right? There was no room to pass you on the left" Slow down and wait? What the hell are 14 year olds in such a hurry to die for?!??!? ???? No helmet and no drivers license for the motorcycle driver and passenger, another child. I on the other hand, had an International Drivers Permit (the cop wasn't even interested in seeing it), and insurance and my seat belt on. Lucky for them, only minor road rash and concussions. Well, no ticket for the 14 year old. No ticket for the adult owner of the motorcycle who gave them the keys. The cops did confiscate the memory card of our car's dashcam for their "investigation". Well, looks like they learned their lesson.... "You can get away with almost anything here". ????
March 27, 20232 yr Quote Driver Learns Their Lesson This sounds more right. You could be on your way to the cleaners very soon. Good luck.
March 27, 20232 yr Popular Post In Thailand turning right, turning left, reversing always look out for motorbikes a lesson you have learnt as well.

March 27, 20232 yr Popular Post lets just ignore looking in our mirrors for other road users before turning as long as i got a license and they don't, what's the problem?
March 27, 20232 yr Popular Post I had a kid of similar age on his bike hit my car as I was leaving home in Bangkok. For some reason he panicked and lost control on a small straight soi and fish- tailed into the side of my car, leaving some nice scratches and dents. He was happily fine but shaken. This was in a quiet soi, so no police around and once he was up on is feet with the help of myself and some motorbike taxis, he was soon on his way. I knew his face from around the neigbourhood and he would have known mine. Not many foreigners in this area. I thought he/his parents might at least turn up at our door with an apology/wai but alas I assume their fear of possibly being reprimanded or facing some financial demand was enough to deter that....the latter was a moot point, insurance paid for it anyway.

March 29, 20232 yr Not recent but my Thai wife was driving our daughter to school. As she slowly went through an intersection that had STOP signs for vehicles to enter the intersection from either her left or right sides an older man with his wife on the back of a motorcycle passed other motorcycles that had stopped for the stop sign and ran straight into the side door of her truck. There were several witnesses. The man was knocked unconscious as his head hit the truck. He had to be taken away by ambulance and spent many weeks in the hospital. His wife had minor injuries. He was quite old, no helmet, no license, no road tax and of course no insurance. He had run through the stop sign without even slowing down. Police and an insurance adjuster on scene both determined my wife was not at fault. However, the police held my wife's driving license for many months as the injured family insisted on 300,000 baht compensation and would not mediate. The wife was given a paper allowing her to continue driving. The family constantly harassed us over their compensation demand. The day before the man was to be released from the hospital the family called and insisted she appear at the hospital with 300,000 baht. She did not go. After many months the family came to mediate and my wife offered 25,000 baht or go to court where she was told she would surely win the case. How much for the lawyers? Luckily the family settled for the 25,000 baht. Not right but that was how it went for her.
March 29, 20232 yr Popular Post In 2021 the exact same thing happened to me. I was turning right with my signal on and a 14 year old and his 12 year old passenger tried to pass me on the right. He hit my door, mirror and front panel causing 30,000 baht damage to my Honda. The kids bounced on the road but only got road rash. Their new motorbike had minimal damage. Obviously he had no license. A policeman happened to be going by and a minute later. After looking at the scene, he told me it was 100% the kids fault. My insurance guy came, we went to Patong police station and filled out lots of papers. The parents came. I expected I'd have to pay a bribe or the insurance excess but paid zero. I assume the family paid since I didn't have to pay the insurance excess and my rates didn't increase. It was my first time dealing with the police and was shocked that it all worked out.

March 29, 20232 yr Popular Post It may have been the fault of the 14 year old kid, but you could easily have avoided the accident with a split second glance in your door mirror before turning. You can be smug apportioning the blame, but avoiding the accident would have been smarter; you are in Thailand where defensive driving skills are of paramount importance.

March 29, 20232 yr I remember that story about the Embassy driver who used to run yellow lights. He did not seem to worry. When we came up to a fresh green light, he slowed down. I asked him why and he said his brother had just got a job driving at a different embassy.
