Rape Unreported In Chiang Mai

Featured Replies

I was recently talking to a girl in Chiang Mai who admitted to being raped twice (once very recent). She seems to make bad decisions regarding her saftey and the men she sees. I asked her why she didn't report it and she gave me her reason. I don't want to mention her reason because it is not the issue.

My question is, with herself confidence noticeably shaken as she is definitly bothered by this expierence, where can she go for help in Chiang Mai where they won't ask too many questions but instead help her come to grips with what happened?

There is not a lot I can do for her because I cannot talk her into going to the police. I was able to convince her to get a HIV test. Other than that, I don't know what to tell her.

Crimes against women seem to happen a lot more than I had once thought.

(Note: She does not work in a bar, she is a teacher.)

One of my favorite bar girls once told me that her first sex was with a male teacher who raped her in the school bathroom! :o

Presumably she is Thai?

Offhand I can think of two organisations she might go to, the first is run by Pavena Hongsakul, the Pavena Foundation.. Email: help(at)pavena.thai.com. The address and phone are: Pavena Foundation for Children and Women, 1047 - 51 Pon Luang Complex, Soi Amporn Phan 12, Moo 7, Phaholythin Road, Klong Tanon, BangKhen, Bangkok 10220. Tel: 02 972 5489-90. Contact the Bangkok office for a Chiang Mai contact. They should have one.

Secondly she could try Empower. Admittedly this organisation is primarily for girls on the game, but they have a lot of helpful resources. EMPOWER Foundation, 57/60 Tivanond Road, Nontburi 11000, Tel: 02-526-8311, 02-968-8021, 02-968-8022. Fax: 02-526-3294. As above, contact Bangkok to get the Chiang Mai address.

Lastly. This site has a listing of Thai women's organisations and contact details.

If she is Farang, she could try the Raintree Resource Center, just east of the Nawarat Bridge. E-mail: raintree(at)cmcchurch.org 053-262660
