Popular Post george
Right now, we are seeing moderate earthquakes from 3-5s in the area. We are watching it close because this island can cause a very disastrous earthquake and tsunami. The Andaman–Nicobar region is extremely prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes because of its geological location. The region located in the Himalayan collision zone is in the highest seismic-hazard zone (category V). On 26 December 2004, at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+7), a major earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1–9.3 magnitude struck with an epicentre off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. On the other hand, Tthe 1941 Andaman Islands earthquake struck the Andaman Islands on June 26 with a magnitude of 7.7 to 8.1. The Nicobar Islands lie in the Indian Ocean about 800 miles (1,300 km) east of Sri Lanka and have an area of 711 square miles (1,841 square km). The Nicobars, along with the Andaman Islands to the north, constitute the boundary between the southeastern Bay of Bengal (west) and the Andaman Sea (east). The Nicobar group includes the islands of Car Nicobar (north), Camorta (Kamorta) and Nancowry (central group), and Great Nicobar (south). 6 1 1

Changes in the water column heights seem to be well within regular levels, if we are to trust the systems placed after 2004 events.

eisfeld
Haven't felt anything in Phuket. Glad that also no danger of tsunami. Not so worried for quotes under 6 that are couple hundred kilometers away. Keep in mind richter scale is exponential and not linear. @georgethe screenshot of yours says "Depth 90.7 miles", that surely can't be right? Quite, they do seem to have had a somewhat checkered history concerning their up-keep. Never mind the safety of the population along the coastline, just think about the financial aid pouring in from overseas.

RickyJB
Ive not experienced an earthquake in phuket since 2012 when we had to run for the hills after a tsunami warning in the afternoon, but allowed to go down after 8pm after the water went well out but only came back slowly. I was meant to fly out that evening but the airport was closed. Until late at night.. the earthquake came from sumatra but we could feel everything shake, exciting but worrying seeing everybody flee to the hills.
