Misbehaving Monks At Pattaya Temple

Featured Replies

From the many reports made by residents to City Hall about monks misbehaving in Pattaya, has forced authorities to do something about it so orders were given to officers to sort it out.

At 4.30 am on Thursday 5th July a group of Municipal Officials went to inspect the scene in front of Wat Chaimongkhon Temple where residents complained about monks violating the Buddhist rules.

The officials found 7 monks lined up in front of the market waiting to be given offerings by people that go out and work at night.

The officials escorted the 7 monks to the temple for the head monk to question.

It was found that 4 of the monks have documents of going into the monk hood at temples up in the North Eastern part of Thailand. The remaining 3 monks had no documents whatsoever but claimed that they were from Jitphawan Temple in Banglamung.

They discovered that these 7 monks violated the Buddhist rules by going out to take offerings from residents between 3-6 am; the rule is allowed to do this act only from sunrise.

Also, they found that the 7 monks took bribes from some market vendors. The vendors would pay the monks 200 each per day to accept offerings that the vendors sell in front of the market and then when all is over to give the offerings back to the vendors so that they can use them to sell again to someone else.

Some of the monks also brought along the famous “Jatukharm” circle Buddha images with them to sell to residents; which is another violation of the Buddhist rules that monks are not allowed to do.

The head monk gave them a long lecture and warned them that if they were found doing these things again; they will be instantly dismissed from the monkhood.
