USA Trump to make decision on US involvement 'within two weeks'
In a closely watched White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt conveyed a direct message from President Donald Trump regarding America’s potential involvement in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. Addressing growing speculation over the U.S. military’s role in the region, Leavitt confirmed that the president has not yet made a final decision. “Based on the fact that there's a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks,” Trump said in the statement delivered by Leavitt. The president’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and increasing pressure at home and abroad to clarify the United States’ position. While details of the possible negotiations with Tehran remain undisclosed, Trump’s statement suggests that the administration sees diplomatic engagement as a potential avenue to defuse the crisis—at least for now. His comments leave open the possibility of direct American involvement but tie any such action to the likelihood and progress of talks with Iranian officials. This conditional approach signals that Trump is attempting to strike a balance between projecting strength and allowing space for diplomacy, as regional violence threatens to spiral further out of control. With speculation intensifying in Washington and allied capitals, the two-week timeline now sets a ticking clock on a decision that could reshape the geopolitical landscape of the region. Community Son Discovers Mother’s Body After Fall From Apartment Balcony
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. The scene unfolded in the early hours of the morning of 19 June, when a 19-year-old son discovered the lifeless body of his mother after she apparently fell from the fifth floor of their apartment building in Lam Luk Ka district, Pathum Thani. Police Lieutenant Colonel Montri Rattanaphan, deputy inspector at Khu Khot Police Station, received the emergency call at approximately 02:00 and responded to the scene alongside forensic officers from Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital and members of the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. The woman, aged 54 and originally from Bua Yai district in Nakhon Ratchasima province, was found face down in a pool of blood at the rear car park of the building. Her head had suffered a severe impact, and her legs were visibly broken. A gold necklace remained intact around her neck. Initial investigations confirmed that she had fallen from her fifth-floor room. Officers found no signs of struggle or forced entry in the apartment and none of the woman’s belongings appeared to have been stolen. According to the building’s security guard, the deceased’s son returned home to find the apartment empty. Thinking his mother had gone out for dinner, he called her mobile several times without response. After unlocking the apartment with a spare key and confirming she was not inside, he stepped out onto the balcony and was horrified to see a body lying motionless near a car below. The guard was alerted and immediately contacted emergency services. The son later told police that his mother had been battling depression for the past six to seven months and had previously attempted to take her own life by ingesting bathroom cleaner. She had been saved in time on that occasion. She earned a living selling clothes at a local market and lived in the apartment with her youngest son, while her three older children lived separately with their own families. On the evening of her death, the son had visited her at her clothing stall to collect a key card. His mother had asked where he was going and he replied that he was meeting a friend. A female relative who often visited had reportedly left around 22:00. Police are treating the case as a likely suicide but have sent the body to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital for a formal post-mortem examination to confirm the cause of death. Report Leaked Call Fuels Fears of Economic Collapse, Thai Business Leaders Warn
Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, centre, leaves after talking to reporters at Government house in Bangkok, Thailand, Thursday, June 19, 2025. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) A leaked audio clip of a call from Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen has set off alarms across Thailand. Mr. Poj Aramwattananon, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, expressed concerns that this incident could lead to the collapse of the Thai economy. Channel 7 reported these potential ramifications, suggesting that the timing could not be worse given the current economic turbulence. Thailand is already grappling with multiple crises. Geopolitical tensions, such as the Israel-Iran conflict, and mounting pressures from US tariff hikes exacerbate the financial landscape. The tourism sector remains in recovery, coupled with insufficient government budgets compounding public debt by an additional 150 billion baht. This potent mix is causing unease, particularly within the capital markets, which Mr. Poj labelled as precarious. The leaked call has also delivered a decisive blow to political confidence. With uncertainty looming, there is an urgent need to address this political scandal to restore stability. Inaction or delay could intensify the economic risks, Mr. Poj warned. The possibility of Prime Minister Shinawatra's resignation or a dissolution of the House of Representatives introduces further variables into an already volatile equation. In parallel, Mr. Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, echoed concerns about the impact on business sentiment. The call leak, amid existing border tensions with Cambodia, is feared to depress economic performance further, potentially dragging it below target projections. The stock market reflects these concerns, with the SET Index closing markedly lower at 1,068.73 points, demonstrating a 2.36% decrease. The plummeting stock market was driven by decreased confidence and selling pressures in vital sectors, including service, media, transportation, and logistics. The political uncertainty amplifies existing economic challenges, fuelling a precarious atmosphere for Thailand's financial future. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Thai Newsroom 2025-06-20
