Trump ignites fresh controversy after outlandish primetime appearance on CNN

Election lies: Trump again refused to acknowledge that he lost the 2020 presidential election several times, instead reiterated false claims that the election was rigged. CNN’s Collins continuously pushed back and pointed to statements by Trump's own election officials noting the election was conducted fairly.

 

January 6 insurrection: Trump blamed then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi among others, saying they were at fault for the security failures on January 6, 2021. Trump falsely claimed that he called on the National Guard to intervene during the riot and in an extended exchange with Collins about the riot, Trump attempted to repaint his role during the insurrection. He also said he would pardon “a large portion” of rioters.

Not much of a "town hall".  As is so often the case, the moderator couldn't help but hogging the spotlight and trying to debate Trump.  I don't think there were any questions at all from the attendees for the first 30 minutes.  

 

Trump made a good case as to why the Russians chose to invade Ukraine under Biden. He was stupid to spend too much time discussing his recent court case, but that is his style. Not known for being introspective or cautious. 

 

In all, a good night for Trump. The obvious contrast between his speaking ability, particularly in a spontaneous setting, and the current President was there for all to see.

Yikes, on the E. Jean Carroll Q's, he did a pefect impression of Humphrey Bogart as Captain Queeg in the "Caine Mutiny" courtroom scene, without fidgeting with the metal balls.

Note he didn't need a cheat sheet and pre-prepared questions(a practise which i am assured is fine and normal in modern democracies). I like it Trumps way, it shows a persons mental abilities and seems more authentic, to me anyway.

CNN is I am sure regretting this decision. The audience was firmly on Trump's side, he got in some good digs at the Democrats, and was able to play the entertainer (one of his strong points).

I’m more how you conclude the audience was firmly on Trump’s side.

 

There were obvious signs of sympathy, but it’s only natural when confronted with someone presenting such clear signs of mental illness.

You really think "raw story" is a credible source?  I would like to hear how the writer came to this conclusion.  New Hampshire is not exactly GOP country- Biden won it in 2020.

It was deliberate policy decision by CNN. Very stupid.

 

A far bigger problem was a decision, presumably taken by producers, to have a live audience “made up of Republicans and undeclared voters who tend to take part in New Hampshire’s Republican primary,” as Collins put it in her introductory remarks.

What that meant was an audience loudly supportive of Trump at every turn — and plainly disdainful of Collins. 

Around halfway through the event, Trump’s description of Collins as “a nasty person” drew whoops of delight.

Doesnt make them Trump supporters.  He has many detractors in the party at all levels. Not to mention the independents...  seems like it backfired on CNN.

I am starting to think it may all be part of a cunning plot on the part of CNN. Much like how the Democratic Party deliberately supported radical GOP candidates in the run up to the 2022 mid term elections. They want Trump as the GOP nominee because they think he is beatable.  More than any of the other candidates.  So they give him a forum and a relatively receptive audience to work his magic with. 

 

And it just might work.

If you're looking for possible conspiracy theories in this, CNN deliberately decided to pump up Trump in order to reduce the chances for his rivals. CNN understand that Trump can't win an election from here.

 

CNN may well have delivered Trump his biggest boost yet in his quest for the 2024 GOP nomination — an ironic twist for a news network to which the former president almost always used to append the term “Fake News.”

All of the traits that Trump’s hardcore supporters admire were on full display on Wednesday — the belligerence, the swatting-aside of criticism and the mocking of opponents and adversaries.

He never came close to being trapped in any politically awkward spot — save perhaps when declining to answer whether he wanted Russia or Ukraine to win the war sparked by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s February 2022 invasion.
