World's temperature likely to break key 1.5C warming threshold for first time between 2023 and 2027, scientists predict

Our overheating world is likely to break a key temperature limit for the first time over the next few years, scientists predict.

Researchers say there's now a 66% chance we will pass the 1.5C global warming threshold between now and 2027.

The chances are rising due to emissions from human activities plus the El Niño weather event expected this summer.

If the world passes the limit, scientists stress the breach, while worrying, will likely be temporary.

Hitting the threshold would mean the world is 1.5C warmer than it was during the second half of the 19th Century, before fossil fuel emissions from industrialisation really began to ramp up.

The 1.5C figure has become a symbol of global climate change negotiations. Countries agreed to "pursue efforts" to limit global temperature rises to 1.5C under the 2015 Paris agreement.

Going over 1.5C every year for a decade or two would see far greater impacts of warming, such as longer heatwaves, more intense storms and wildfires.

Really? So 1.49 is safe and 1.51 is dangerous.

Climate comedy from the UN.

The UN has no role in climate science.

The long term consequences of the trend in warming moving from 1.49 to 1.51 are not good. Do you disagree?

It's similar to body temperature rising from 37 to 39 degrees. Maybe if a doctor were sure that 39 degrees would be the highest temperature, it wouldn't be cause for alarm, but if the body temperature continues to rise, then the consequences could be fatal.

So many Deniers here are saying they flunked Science without saying they flunked Science.

It's childlike to disagree with the scientific consensus without providing an alternate explanation, backed by data. Cue @Yellowtailasking if it's 97% of scientists backing the scientific consensus, as a deflection.

1.55 vs 1.45 what's the difference? 1/10th of stuff all.

I thought the world was supposed to end years ago.

You are misinformed.

Why make posts that allow  everyone to see that you are relatively ignorant on the subject?

We should post to inform people here, not try to fool them with lies. Don't you agree?

The planet is warming due to human produced carbon dioxide, which overwhelm the natural cooling trend.

IMO the biggest scam ever perpetrated on a gullible population is that we can actually modify climate change, but only if we make Elon Musk very rich and pay more taxes.

Does anyone actually believe that windmills and electric cars will make ANY difference at all? Sod all else being done. No restrictions on the aviation or cruise liner industry, is there?  No push to lower birth rates, no attempts to stop the destruction of rainforests worth the paper they are written on, no attempts to clean up ocean pollution that make a difference, no attempt to have climate conferences by VDO. All BS and hypocrisy IMO

If humanity perishes it will be because government didn't do anything to actually make a difference, IMO.

It's childlike to run around claiming that the world is warming without having a solution to it.

What solution do 97% of scientists support to solve the problem? So far it's all Chicken Little, but no effective suggestions as how to stop the sky falling.

I haven't read that any of them suggested the best way to make a difference which is less people on the planet.

Really? they don't have a solution for it? Every single one of them has said burning fossil fuels is the main problem.

How is human produced carbon dioxide different from carbon dioxide produced by other means?

How does the climate differentiate between human produce carbon dioxide and not human produced carbon dioxide?

Total carbon dioxide is the issue.

1. Non human activity sources of CO2, stable production over millions of years.

2. CO2 Human activity produced CO2, rapidly increasing over a couple of hundred years.

The environment does not ‘distinguish between the two’, it’s the total 1+2 that causes the retention of solar heat in the  atmosphere and oceans.

Temperature rises then accelerate the release of other greenhouse gasses.

Plenty of good science on the subject.

I agree, but perhaps you can inform us of what you would do to change it back to what it used to be. You seem to be somewhat short of solutions.

This is an old Denier trolling technique.

1 Change the subject to solutions, rather than agreeing on the climate change problem.

2 Debate the solutions.

3 After sufficient time has been wasted, claim that Global Warming isn't real.

4 Shampoo, rinse repeat.

This topic is about the increase in global temperature. If you want to talk about solutions, start your own topic.

Easy beginner questions.

https://www.climate.gov/news-features/climate-qa/how-do-we-know-build-carbon-dioxide-atmosphere-caused-humans

Isotopic measurement of atmospheric carbon dioxide provides information on what's human produced and what's natural.

The global climate doesn't care where the CO2 comes from, the atmosphere warms when CO2 increases. If some natural source somehow belched a huge amount of CO2, the atmosphere would warm.

Scientists drive cars and fly in planes. The alarmists on here do so as well.

Climate comedy show. None of them take it seriously except when on their soup box or making money from it.

Truly amazing reply. What is the point of blathering on about how the situation came to be if no solutions are forthcoming? I assume you have none then.

I used to think you were mildly amusing, despite thinking you knew more than the rest of us, but I have to wonder if you are even worth my time if that is what we can expect from you.

Bye.

All leftists should stop using cars and the internet.

Fairly good solution. Maybe the climate will go from 1.51c to 1.499995.

Regardless of the personal actions of scientists, the planet is warming, caused by human produced carbon dioxide.

This topic isn't about alarmism.

It's about the reality that the planet is warming. Do you disagree?

He's not claiming the topic is "about" alarmism, he is claiming the people like you that are posting are alarmists.

Do you disagree?
