Devastating Rainstorm Claims 6 Lives and Causes Destruction in Phichit

Phichit, May 22, 2023 - As anticipated by the Meteorological Department's forecast for the onset of the rainy season, heavy rainfall swept through multiple areas of Phichit province, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. The province had braced itself for 20% of the predicted rainfall, and the forecast proved to be spot on, reported Siam Rath.

 

During the rainfall, strong winds and a cyclonic storm affected the Wat Noinpo School located in Sam Ngam District, Phichit. The school had a large dome building used as a volleyball court, a 7-a-side football field, and for various other sports activities.

 

In the evening, young individuals from the village gathered to participate in sporting activities, with dozens of people engaged in different types of sports.

As the evening progressed, rain began to pour heavily, accompanied by strong winds. Everyone outside sought shelter inside the dome, which served as a recreational area. However, at approximately 18:30, a cyclonic storm suddenly struck and caused the collapse of the large metal sheet roof of the dome building.

 

This incident resulted in 6 fatalities and 18 injuries, including 7 seriously injured and 11 with minor injuries. The injured individuals were immediately transported to Sam Ngam Hospital and Wachiramarni Hospital for treatment.

In response to the aforementioned incident, Mr. Panyot Asawapichayon, the Governor of Phichit province, along with the police, rescue units, and relevant government agencies, promptly arrived at the scene to address the situation and provide assistance to the affected individuals.

Furthermore, it was discovered that in the Noinpo Village area of Sam Ngam District, several residential houses were also severely damaged as the storm blew off their roofs.

 

An assessment of the damages will be conducted on the morning of May 24, 2023, to determine the extent of the destruction and find ways to aid and support the affected victims in this natural disaster.

6 students killed, 18 injured in school roof collapse

 

 

Six students were crushed to death and 18 others, many of them also students, sustained injuries when the roof of a school building in Sam Ngam district of Phichit province collapsed on them during a heavy rainstorm on Monday evening.

 

Initial reports indicate that two students died at the scene and four others were pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital in the district.

 

It is reported that many students and others took shelter in a building of Wat Noen Po School in Noen Po sub-district during the heavy downpour and strong wind before the roof caved in.

Roof collapses at school in Thailand during storm, 7 killed

Seven people, including four children, died after a roof at a school in Pichit province, northern Thailand, collapsed during a storm yesterday. Eighteen more people are injured.

 

Students at Wat Nern Por primary school in Sam Ngam district were playing football after school when the storm hit at around 6pm. Students, parents, and teachers were sheltering beneath the domed roof structure over the school’s multipurpose courtyard when it suddenly collapsed amid strong winds and rain.

 

Three people were killed at the scene including a janitor named Dang Ongdang, the parent of a student, and the school’s football coach.

Five people sadly later died in the hospital including a student’s mother Wanphen Chanmol, a seven year old girl, a 13 year old boy, a seven year old boy, and a six year old boy.

Still wondering why the same is not said about all the deaths in the States when a Tornado kills many in (flimsy?) houses?

Hope theirs some sort of an enquiry. The structure of these roofs are designed that they cant give way (fall in) especially dome shaped.

Lets hope theirs no more fatalities among the injured.

I can't understand how the metal roof support frames can fall down, I've watched these type of roofs being constructed in my village, they are securely welded to the rebar metal rods coming out of the concrete pillars. I can't see any evidence however of any concrete pillars so it may be just a flimsy construction to begin with.

The tornados that destroy whole towns in the USA have winds 250-300+ kilometers per hour.   I've been through some horrible storms here in Thailand, have never seen more than about 120 kilometers per hour / ~60 knots.   This much wind is very easy to plan for.

Why wasn't the event cancelled? The school authorities knew bad weather was on its way.

Why have the children walk to school in the midst of a tropical storm?

Not an event, there is nothing to cancel. If you read the original post you will find that local folk use the area after school for sport activities on their own.

Was the accident unpredictable? Is this the first cyclone ever? Cant provide proper construction?

Its a shame and a mess.

I guess, some mistakes werde made and some pockets were filled with saved money instead a solid construction.

A tornado is not the same as thunderstorm induced winds.

It was not a cyclone. That is just media exaggeration to justify an engineering failure that was entirely predictable.

Cleaning up the mess is trivial, in the big picture. Loss of life can't be "cleaned up".

I saw the aftermath on Thai TV & was upset that the concrete in the columns looked like gravel & powder.

The steel in the columns looked fine but the concrete mix terrible.

The welds at top of columns attaching to the roof steel  still intact, obviously bent.

There are thousands of similar structures around Thailand with open sides due to the climate

& when built correctly are strong & wind can travel through so no pressure build up.

Very sad, condolences to the families

Engineering most probably OK, problem is if the owner cheapes out and does not listen to the Engineer. Also I wonder if the authorities need the Engineer to sign off ?

This is Thailand and weather like this is frequent, buildings are generally built to withstand this weather.

 

Only thing i don't know is how long the structure was there for like how many years, generally if its old its built well with good materials however if its a new or recent build that's another story substandard building materials can be used.
