Restricted roads/motorways for riding a 125cc m/cycle

Featured Replies

Please can anyone tell me of an easy (quick) way to recognise a Thai highway where the riding of a 125cc m/c is prohibited.

Also, how is such a highway designated on Google maps?

Thank you,

David.

Most are blue signage. However, Google. Maps has an option to avoid toll roads and motorways and also to set your vehicle to a motorcycle which adapts for suitable roads (but can take you down some strange sois).

How does one "set your vehicle to a m/c"?

In Google maps click the respecting symbol.

Example picture is in German but should be obvious.
As you can see they won't send you towards motorways 9 and 7 as they would do for car.

Instead going highways 304 and 331 (better anyway).

As far as I know there are still only two active motorways (#7, #9)?

In the Bangkok area there are tons of "expressways" (toll) which are prohibited.

Also some major bridges in Bangkok are prohibited for motorbikes.

Apart from that I don't know what else might be prohibited.

Some roads I would definitely avoid with motorbike like the crowded highways towards Bangkok.

In theory Google maps shouldn't direct you there if you select "Motorcycle"

Edit:- just tried my second example. Google will not direct you over the Bhumipol Bridge if "motorcycle" is selected.

Apart from paid tollways, expressways and motorways like Hwy 7 and 9

most highways with access control/ frontage road like Highway 1, north of Bangkok, and Hwy 3 (Bang Na) also prohibits motorcycle in the middle bit, usually there will be signs at all slip road and entrances

Apart from overpass bridges, underpass tunnel are also prohibited to motorcycles

Many thanks to all respondents.

David.

Just be aware that the motorcycle option sometimes takes you down some iffy, tight roads. I often leave mine on car setting and just set avoid motorways and tolls. Whist this does not negate the overoasses, most are well signposted as are the tunnels.
