Sea wall projects in Thailand will now require EIA study under a new edict

Construction of all sea wall and breakwater projects will be required an environmental impact assessment (EIA) under a new ministerial edict from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, which came into effect following its publication in the Royal Gazette today (Thursday).

Thai Prison Warden’s Cannot Grant House Arrest to Inmates with Incomplete Imprisonment

A prison warden does not have the authority to grant house arrest to an inmate who has yet to complete their jail time, the Thai Department of Corrections clarified amidst rumors that former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra would be placed on house arrest when he returns to Thailand in July as pledged.

Warnings over poisonous jellyfish at Phuket beaches

Lifeguards in Phuket have warned beachgoers of the presence of poisonous jellyfish at some of the island’s beaches. The Portuguese man o’ war (actually not a jellyfish but a species of siphonophore) found in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans and lifeguards say they have found many on the island’s beaches during the current monsoon season.

Phuket officials prepare for final pitch ahead of Expo 2028 announcement

Phuket officials are crossing their fingers as they prepare to make one last pitch in the island’s bid to host the 2028 Specialised Expo. The Bangkok Post reports that a special delegation will make a final presentation to the Bureau International des Expositions in Paris on June 21 with an announcement before the end of the month.

Nation Thailand reports that pro-democracy group 24 June Democracy plans to gather outside the Election Commission in the Laksi district of the capital from around 1.00pm.

This was in response to the recent influx of 124 undocumented children at Thai Rat Witthaya 6 (Ratchamongkol) School in Ang Thong province. The Ministry of Education is working closely with local organisations to ensure the necessary care and protection for these children while related agencies continue to verify their legal status.

Thailand’s Excise Department probes official’s involvement in oil smuggling case

An investigation is underway by Thailand’s Excise Department into allegations that a high-level official attempted to persuade police to release a truck carrying 15,000 litres of smuggled oil. The department’s Deputy Director-General Kriangkrai Pattanaporn revealed that a probe committee was formed to look into the arrest of the 47 year old driver, identified only as Sombat, in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

New kidney disease test kit offers 94% accuracy, eases early diagnosis access

A new effective and accurate diagnostic kit has been developed to screen for early-stage kidney disease, with a correctness rate of 94%, a sensitivity rate of 96%, and a specificity rate of 97.8%. This screening method has been approved by the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has been proposed for inclusion in the gold card scheme to make it more accessible to the public.

Former temple abbot allegedly sexually assaults teen girl in Thailand

An elderly former temple abbot, who is 78 years old, is accused of sexually assaulting a 16 year old girl and threatening to destroy her family’s home within the temple grounds. The girl’s brother secretly recorded the abbot’s behaviour and handed the evidence to the police, leading to the abbot’s suspension.

Another bad boy Bangkok taxi driver was caught engaging in unscrupulous deeds, this time attempting to rip off a South Korean tourist, charging the foreigner 700 baht for a 30-minute trip. Fortunately, the South Korean man saw through the taxi driver’s antics and paid him only 300 baht. The taxi driver was furious with this and went into meltdown, cursing and swearing at the tourist.

Highway horror: Civil engineer’s fatal crash claims delivery rider’s life in Bangkok

Dengue fever on the rise, more elderly people being infected
