Economy will be the first casualty of rising political uncertainty

The latest action of Thailand’s Election Commission (EC) to investigate the main prime minister hopeful has heightened political uncertainty in the country with the potential to hurt market sentiment, according to academics and businessmen.

Despite dismissing complaints against Pita Limjaroenrat, leader of the Move Forward Party, over his alleged ownership of shares in a media company, the EC recently sprung a surprise by proceeding to investigate whether Pita, the PM candidate of coalition leader Move Forward Party, was qualified to run for an MP seat in the May 14 general election.

The election agency’s action has sparked outrage among supporters of the party. It has given rise to conspiracy theories of dirty tactics being employed by the suspected “mastermind” of an elite group using independent organizations and courts to grab political power.

Many observers are also worried that these sudden developments could potentially delay the formation of a new government, with its negative effects on the economy.

My missus, now of the post 50 generation, and her neighbour, a lifelong government worker, are excitedly choosing shades of Orange to wear when Pita arrives in Chiang Mai soon.

They're like girls going to see Korean boy band BTS.

The point of this anecdote is that neither woman were political beasts a few years ago, now my wife has political talk shows going on her device all day long.

The dinosaurs have no idea just how much the lower, and lower-middle class of Thai society has moved against them since the Shinawatra years.

This place is going to explode soon.

The time has come to remove the ruling/elitist classes.

We're just seeing the tip of the iceberg presently.

Time will tell.

My wife is exactly the same, never seen her so excited about politics.

The problem is the other side is exactly the same, so the country is deep polarized....no easy way out....The man in Dubai might be a compromise.

Wrong.

The other side is a dwindling, shrinking, disappearing collection of greedy establishment lackeys and brainwashed elderly (hastily tumbling off the demographic cliff). The other side is a beaten, dishevelled bunch of crooks who, as they’ve always done, are relying on cheating to stay in the game. The other side is now on the wrong side of the grass, six feet under, where they belong.

All of this of course poses the question…

How much love can can a junta lover give when there is no junta for a junta lover to love?

If the other side is only 10% and radical it is enough to destroy a country....And there are more than 10% monarchists in Thailand who react to propaganda about 112.

That may be so - but it is dishonest to portray both sides as being equal in support.

Isn't it interesting, the side you support, you are talking about them being radical and destructive to the country.

What will it take to open your eyes?

You are right, they aren't equal in support.....Don't be naive...different Elites fight for power. No one is fighting or even care for the regular people.

A left wing socialist government that is active is worse than a former general that only sits there and does nothing.....I don't care about democracy, I care how much the government restrict freedoms. I rather have a dictator from which I never hear or see anything than a clean democratic elected government that restricts my life with new laws every month. I dislike both, but think they are easier to tolerate if they make less and Prayuth did very little (if he wouldn't have done this Covid disaster and acted more like Tanzania, I would be a fanboy)

You care for a government that doesn’t restrict YOUR freedom, even if that comes at the cost of restricting everybody else’s freedom.

How do you not understand why you guys lost the election? The answer is of course your extreme level of selfishness as shown in your post here.

Wresting the "economy" away from a bunch of venal thugs and their enablers might have a (very temporary) effect on it's performance. Small price to pay, imo.

I did not loose any elections....I am not a fanboy of everyone and I do not restrict anyones freedom. I am for everyones freedom. Freedom=no one controls anyone.

You want your radical left controls everything and take everyones freedom. For example restriction Marijuana is less freedom, even if the party who does it was elected with a majority and even if the freedom comes from a military dictator. If during Covid in Thailand/Germany/California etc people had restrictions and less freedom with their democratic elected government than in Belarus with their dictator. Democracy and freedom is not the same....Hitler was democratic elected. Democracy is a tool to ensure freedom for everyone. If the tools fails...people elect Adolf Hitler than a military coup is better.

You support a regime who severely restricted millions of peoples freedom in many different ways.

Thais aren’t even free to buy the beer of their own choosing because of restrictive monopolies imposed by your junta.

How silly to think unelected authoritarian rule is going to result in a freer society. It defies belief that anyone could posit such inanity.

Why did Hitler dismantle democracy?

Why is a coup better than an election (do you think the military know better than the combined voice of the citizens of a nation)?

You are right on the beer and if MF changes it than I'll applaud it. I think it isn't an important topic. But still the monopoly and the sales times should be removed. I full agree with you on this.

I am no specialist on the beer laws but I think it predates this government, the same discussion was 20 years ago as well, I think.

And on Marijuana they want to do the exact opposite......your evil dictator gave freedom and your democratic MF want to ban it and continue the stupid narcotic laws

......remember the elected Thaksin had the war against drugs with the bullets flying deep....Is it a free society when you maybe catch a bullet on the side walk in the evening.

(in Nakhon Si Thammerat you could hear shootings every night)

When an elected government is murdering or torture (Bush) people than any means are justified to remove them. I prefer an election but if it saves hundreds or thousands of lives I am OK with a coup....

If a government just makes bad politics of course democracy is the only way to fix it.
