Social Media Confusion Over Alleged Alien Worker Unraveled; Turns Out to be a Thai National

On June 13th, Major General Piyasak Toskul, the Commander of Division 1 of the Royal Thai Police, disclosed information about a situation that has been causing a stir on social media. 

 

The controversy began when an Australian YouTuber named David Kai posted a video featuring a middle-aged tuk-tuk driver on Yaowarat Road. The driver claimed to be Cambodian in the video, which was later shared by another YouTube channel named Neighbour's Perspective, and attracted widespread attention and criticism due to allegations of illegal migrant work, reported Siam Rath.

 

The backlash led the police to launch an investigation, overseen by Police Colonel Phasakorn Rattanapannada, Deputy Commander of the Division, and Police Lieutenant Colonel Suriya Puangsombat, Assistant Investigation Chief. They were tasked with tracking down the supposed Cambodian man shown in the video.

 

The investigation bore fruit when Police Captain Thongthai Pairua, along with other officers, located the man at his residence in Pom Prap District, Bangkok. Identified as Boonsri Suksai, a 68-year-old tuk-tuk driver from Phontsai, Roi Et Province, it was confirmed that he is in fact, Thai.

Boonsri explained that his ancestors were ethnic Khmer from Surin, which is why he can speak Cambodian. On the day in question, when David Kai asked him where he was from, Boonsri thought that saying he was from Roi Et might confuse the foreigner. Hence, he stated he was from Cambodia, as he can speak Khmer and also English, given his long experience of serving tourists.

 

In conclusion, the person who appeared in the social media video is not an alien worker and has not violated any immigration law. The police have circulated this news through mass media to clarify the situation.
