This would not be the first time this has happened. If he went to immigration then isn't it something like a 25k fine then all is OK?

No, he did go to immigration and will get deported and banned from Thailand . The days of just paying 20 000 Baht for any length of overstay have long gone , long overstays these days are blacklisting from going back to Thailand for a number of years
Enoon
So that was more than 5 years.....in fact more than 10 years. So just say more than 10 years. Years and months if you like.....maybe weeks? Maybe don't always report the precise number of days......which is pretty much always how the durations, irrespective of length, are reported. Because the precise number becomes less and less relevant as the duration rises. And because it sounds a bit....a bit....y'know....."Spergy": " an awkward, pedantic, or obsessive nature stereotypically associated with Asperger's syndrome." ???? I just read (dated November 2022): this is from the airport: 500baht a day, this goes to a maximum of 20,000 Baht for overstays of 40 days or longer. The good news is that if you pay the fine and then leave the country then you won't have any problem returning to Thailand at a future date.
