Customs officers accused of stealing durians worth 1.8 million baht

A Thai durian middleman accused the Aranyaprathet Customs House in the Isaan province of Sa Kaeo of stealing durians worth 1.8 million baht.

The story of the durian middleman caught fire on Thai social media on Sunday, June 25. According to several posts on Facebook, the middleman complained that the customs wrongly blamed him for illegally importing durians from Cambodia.

The middleman insists that he had bought approximately eight tons of durians from a local plantation in the northeastern province of Si Sakate. He explained that he hired a truck driver to transfer the durian from the Si Sakate to the central province of Chantaburi for export.

However, customs officers informed the driver that the durians were illegally imported and must be seized.

The middleman then visited the Aranyaprathet Customs House to retrieve the durian but found that his products were all sold by the authorities. He claimed that some officers showed him a video that all of the durians were resold to other government departments in the province.

Many Thai citizens criticised the authorities for their wrongdoings and demanded an explanation from Thai Customs.

16,000 tons at 1.8 million baht?

Isn't that like 3 USD a lb. or 7 Euro a kg?

seems very high, my math must be wrong.

They might have scoffed it all you know what they are like over this muck!????

Your math!

8000kg (not 16000 tons) @ 225 baht kg US$6.40 = 1.8m baht

That price/kg is too high, suspect the 'owner' trying to get compensation for a lot more than they're worth, standard export grade has been at 120-135 baht/kg.

225 would be premium grade of specific varieties here in Chanthaburi, not surplus from over the border

Didn't I read somewhere last week customs kept a container of frozen fish for 4 yrs and legally were allowed to  'Distribute' them locally.

PS we only got 120b a kilo for our durian at market, sold by local vendors at 180b

I'm going to break it down:

1.8 million Baht = 51K USD 46.5 EUR

8 Tons = 16K lbs.

16K lbs. = 7250 kg.

฿114 for 1lb of Durian.

฿248 for 1kg of Durian.

51K USD/16K lbs. =   $3.2 for 1lb of Durian.

46.5 EUR/7250 kg. = €6.4 for 1kg of Durian.

Note your conversions are astray between imperial and metric

The weight here in Thailand would be a metric ton ie 1000kg (2205lb), 8 ton equates to 17637 pounds if that is the measurement you choose to use.

Wow, thanks for the info, 17637 is a lot different than 16,000. Recalculating! Recalculating!

EDIT: My previous post was wrong, here are the new calculations, which I hope are not wrong.

I'm going to break it down:

1.8 million Baht = 51K USD 46.5 EUR

8 Tons = 17637 lbs.

17637 lbs. = 8000 kg.

฿102 for 1lb of Durian.

฿225 for 1kg of Durian.

51K USD/16K lbs. =   $2.90 for 1lb of Durian.

46.5 EUR/7250 kg. = €5.81 for 1kg of Durian.
