Move Forward may agree to a “trade-off” for House speakership

The Move Forward party may consider sacrificing some cabinet seats as a “trade-off” for the House speakership, which has become a bone of contention between it and its political ally the Pheu Thai party, according to party sources.

The sources insist that, as the party commands the highest number of MPs in the House, Move Forward is entitled to the House speakership.

The fight for this top legislative post has exposed a serious schism between the two major political parties, which are in the process of forming a post-election coalition with six smaller parties.

I really hope MF and PT can resolve this issue. It would be a tragedy and massive disappointment for the 24 million voters who want change in LOS if MF ended up in the opposition, twiddling their thumbs as 4 years go by.

Those voters will not forgive their respective parties for letting this opportunity slip through their hands.

The conservative forces will try every trick to bar Pita and even MF, that is largely out of MF's hands and the public understand that, but to fail because MF and PT fall at the first hurdle is unforgivable for both parties.

Any failure to agree plays straight into the hands of the "Thai people aren't smart/mature enough to know what they want" mantra of successive military-backed (and palace-sanctioned) administrations.

It seems PT party wants the House Speaker seat so if MF party does not get the PM position then PT will still have the House Speaker slot and its influence over whoever becomes PM (maybe PT itself).

The establishment (and the senators that they have holds on) will stop at anything to get the people's choice, MF party, out.  Shameful ...

They deserve the speaker....but if MF is not sure about their PM, they can give the PM to PT. Which is not unusual that second or third strongest has the PM and take the speaker.

You can't have everything when you need coalition partner

PT does not deserve the speaker slot and they don't deserve 14 minister seats with MF getting 14 too.  PT with the speaker slot would block some changes MF wants to do.

Why all these politicians are so scared of even talking about constitution changes (including Sect 112) makes no sense.  MF party does not have the votes to push some of the more controversial issues, but there is no reason these issues should not be discussed in parliament.

This makes more sense ... Thaksin is playing games just to get home.

PT pledged not to work with military backed parties.

That was before the election......not a complete new phenomena that parties don't fullfill their promises....

I did not calculate it yet but I think it should be just enough PTP+the small+BJ+Dems....But it would need more senators and they sure don't like PTP much.

But if they promise to not make any problems with the monarchy the might convince them.

Beside that they might be able to buy some MPs from the military backed and from MFP to vote them....100 Millions is the going rate the rumors says.

With almost the same amount of votes they deserve almost the same power. If PM goes to MF than Speaker to PTP.

On the ministers of course it depends on what minister...health and defense make a lot money.....so you can have less ministers but more important one.
MFP is far away of having a majority alone so they need to share with coalition partners.....and one that is almost as strong deserves almost as many positions.

PT have ten less MPs than MF but far fewer votes for Party List MPs

14 million for MF, 10 million for PT

I don't think you can include the Democrats, they've always hated PT, plus with a new leader they may vote with MF.

No, if PT want their owner home, they're going to have to accept the watch collector and his merry military backers.

Let's see่ how well that goes down with the public

151 vs 141 MPs...and that is what counts. That is almost the same strength....

But if MFP think they want all positions for themself than they should try to make a coalition without PTP...should be possible with BJ+Dems.

If they don't want that than they must share. No way around that.

And that without the senator problem....

All a question of money.........and not a coalition, just voting yes with the excuse of protecting the monarchy (and of course some money changing hands)

The Dems don't care too much what the promised yesterday.....I recall Abhisits......

But the military parties.....interesting, I didn't thought of them....I guess the PTP activists would not like it.....But what would the mass of the voter say when it comes together with some free money?

I have seen stranger things: the election of Abhisit for example....with the MPs locked in the hotel without telephone and Thaksins wife trying to pay more than the others but unable to call.....

Lock them all in a room and don't let them out until it's sorted...

do the people of Thailand a favour and don't sour this golden opportunity.

Pt is depressed that they did not win but want to have main positions...They don't realize that maybe people voted for Move Forward as they hope not to have a new Shinawatra again...But the are desperately seeking for leader positions

exposed a serious schism between the two major political parties

It's a political power issue, not an ideological split, aka "schism." Same happened when PM-elect Prayut had to negotiate his Cabinet and Speaker position with his coalitions.

Looking at the ministerial portfolio that both parties want, it don’t appear that PTP is asking for the main

A listed positions. MFP want the A listed ministerial positions including Foreign Affairs, Defence, Interior, Finance, Education, Energy, Labour and Justice. PTP was offered Commerce, Agriculture,  Transport , Tourism and Industry portfolios.
