Community Indonesian Man Self-Harms on Bangkok Pedestrian Bridge
Pictures courtesy of Workpoint. Police in Khlong Luang, Pathum Thani, were forced to stage an intervention, after a foreign national armed with scissors repeatedly injured himself on a pedestrian overpass, bringing traffic on Phahonyothin Road to a standstill for several hours. Officers from Khlong Luang Police Station, led by Pol Col Athimes Chaiyasarnwichit, rushed to the scene outside a company near Bangkok University at kilometre marker 37+300 after reports of a man in a state of distress. Witnesses described him as a 35- to 40-year-old Indonesianwho was seen slashing at his chest and left wrist while pacing back and forth on the footbridge. Despite attempts at negotiation, the man became increasingly paranoid and edged outside the protective railing, raising fears he would leap into oncoming traffic. Police shut down the fast lane in both directions, causing tailbacks stretching over 10 kilometres. One passer-by, 23-year-old delivery rider Mr Wayo, said: “I saw him on the bridge cutting himself and immediately phoned the police. It was shocking.” Officers coordinated with a lorry driver to position a tarpaulin-covered truck beneath the bridge to cushion any potential fall. Moments later, as rescue workers distracted the man by offering him water, police officers and volunteers seized the opportunity to charge and restrain him, disarming him of a pair of scissors. First responders from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation administered first aid at the scene. The man had serious lacerations on his wristand bruising to his chest, before being rushed to Thammasat University Hospital. According to volunteer rescuer Ms Sophit Klaksakijit, the man admitted he was overwhelmed by personal problems and simply wanted to return home. Police officer Sirichai Phaobleklak described the decisive moment: “He was about to climb out again when he looked away. That’s when we charged and pulled him back to safety. It was very close.” Authorities are now working to contact the Indonesian embassy to provide support while the man receives treatment. Adapted by Asean Now from Workpoint 2025-08-26 -

Police are preparing to charge a motorcycle taxi rider with reckless driving after he allegedly fell asleep at the handlebars, causing his passenger, a Myanmar woman, to plunge from an elevated section of road at theRatchayothin Junction. The incident, which occurred on the morning of 24 August, was captured in a video clip shared widely on TikTok, sparking public outrage over rider safety. According to witnesses, the motorbike, operated by Thanaphat Munni, struck the barrier of the Ratchayothin overpass at around 07:00. The collision caused his passenger, identified as Ms Lwin Lwin Aye, 28, from Myanmar, to be thrown off the bridge. She hit the windscreen of a passing car before crashing onto the road below, suffering severe injuries. Thanaphat, who admitted to being a Grab rider, told police he had dozed off momentarily while transporting his passenger. He escaped with only minor injuries. Local motorcycle taxi driver “Kai”, who rushed to assist at the scene, urged fellow riders to ensure they are well-rested before carrying passengers. “Drivers must always put passenger safety first,” he said. Pol Lt Col Somporn Uppapong, deputy traffic chief at Phahonyothin Police Station, confirmed that Thanaphat will be charged with reckless driving causing serious injury. Emergency crews transported Ms Lwin Lwin Aye to Paolo Kaset Hospital, where she remains under treatment. Police said further legal proceedings will follow once the investigation is complete. Cha-am Beach May Allow Booze on Buddhist Holy Days File photo courtesy of Wikipedia Cha-am in Phetchaburi Province is weighing up booze sales on five Buddhist holy days, aiming to draw tourists and give the local economy a lift. Deputy Provincial Governor Wanpen Mungsri announced plans to permit alcohol on Visakha Bucha, Asarnha Bucha, Makha Bucha, Buddhist Lent, and the end of Buddhist Lent days. Sales would be allowed from Cha-am beach to the areas west of Phetkasem Road, offering limited coverage within the municipality. Wanpen emphasised the need for a public forum to gather local opinions from businesses and residents. The initiative targets economic benefits and increased tourism, amid eased governmental restrictions on alcohol in certain areas since May. Authorities have retained control to prevent disturbances and ensure minors are not affected, highlighting a balanced approach between tradition and tourism. The decision reflects a potential shift towards accommodating visitors while respecting cultural practices. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Bangkok Post 2025-08-26
