Volunteer Policeman Caught In Pattaya With Illegal Pistol

A young man was arrested in the early hours of July 10th, in Pattaya carrying an unlicensed gun. He claimed the gun belonged to a regular policeman, who had left it with him for self-defence. He was subsequently charge and bailed.

At 1.30 am, Pol.Capt.Jaturaphat Singsathit, of Pattaya Traffic Police with his team were on duty, controlling traffic and keeping a wary eye out for offenders near Soi Yensabai, South Pattaya, when they had occasion to stop a young motorcyclist who wasn’t wearing a crash helmet. The man, identified as Mr. Kritsada Trakultila or Geng (27) from Bangkok, initially appeared reluctant to answer police questions, and subsequently claimed to be a police volunteer, (Class # 3, personal code: Lang Khao 302) He had a walkie-talkie in his shoulder bag and the police, being suspicious, searched further and found a loaded .22 pistol. He was immediately arrested for possessing an illegal gun.

Mr. Kritsada later claimed that the gun belonged to a police officer who was his boss that had left the gun with him for self-protection and to use in connection with his voluntary police activities. The police, however, didn’t believe him and took him in for questioning.

Mr. Kritsada eventually confessed during the investigation that he had bought the gun from a teenager to keep for self-defence only. He was consequently arrested and charged with possessing an illegal gun.

The reporter, making his daily rounds at the police station where Mr. Kritsada was in custody, happened to notice a group of senior volunteer police who had apparently come in to shed light on the case and substantiate Kritsada’s claimed that the gun belonged to a police officer and was officially registered. However, the gun showed signs of having its registration mark erased, leading to suspicions that the gun could have been stolen.

Pol.Lt.Col.Theerasak Jaruensri, the investigating officer, was duly notified and informed the volunteer police group that Mr. Kritsada has broken the law by carrying an unlicensed gun. He further admonished the group, insisting that volunteer police, like regular police should abide by the law. The head of the volunteer police will consequently be notified about the case. Mr. Kritsada was later bailed out by the senior volunteer police officer to the tune of 10,000 Baht.
