Ten Injured in Fireworks Factory Explosion

CHIANG MAI, July 24 (TNA) – An explosion occurred at a fireworks factory in Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai, causing 10 injuries and damage to both the factory and nearby houses.

 

The explosion at about 1 p.m. was accompanied by a loud blast and a plume of smoke rising into the sky, visible from a distance. Initial reports indicate that 10 people have been injured and rescue workers have sent them to hospital.

Incredibly lucky that no one was killed.

But having a firework factory in what appears to be a residential area doesn't seem to be the greatest idea.

Working with gunpowder is inherently dangerous which is why the industry is heavily regulated. A single spark from unathorised tools, friction on 'loose' powder, or hand-loading can result in an explosion. The suggestion that it was an electrical fault implies the factory did not have an intrinsically safe electrical system and that, likely, the factory was unlicensed.

 

Looking at the photos above I conclude it was an illegal facility lacking any reasonable  safety standards and had been erected on a spare plot in a residential area. I should not be surprised if the owner lived in the house next door.

 

Has it got Third Party insurance? No? Never mind neighbours, you will have to claim on your own.????
