In Tambon Rang Ka Yai, Amphoe Phimai, Nakhon Ratchasima province, Boonchuay, a 63-year-old trader, transformed the unused space behind his house into a successful edible insect farm.

Boonchuay's establishment comprises three cement ponds, each measuring 2 meters wide and 3 meters long. Within these, trays of unfertilized chicken eggs are stacked in layers to house crickets, locusts, and other insects.

This unique infrastructure, akin to a condominium, also has dishes of water and food on top, reported Sanook.

In addition to their primary food, the insects occasionally feed on various vegetables, such as morning glory and cassava leaves.

To protect the bugs from predators, the "condos" are covered with a tight-knit green net. After 35-40 days of breeding, these insects reach maturity and are sold at varying prices.

For instance, crickets go for 120 baht per kilogram, while locusts, being tastier and richer, command a higher price of 150 baht per kilogram.

This endeavor now brings in an impressive average monthly income of 25,000-30,000 baht, turning insect farming from a sideline into Boonchuay's primary source of family income.
