Heartless boss denies leave to woman grieving mother’s death in Thailand

A gripping incident on social media unfolded when a young woman posted an exchange with her heartless boss, where her requests for leave were repeatedly denied – even as her mother lay critically ill and eventually passed away. The woman had to navigate the harsh demands of her job when she was urgently needed at home.

 

The online post narrated a conversation that highlighted the lack of empathy from the woman’s superior at work. It started with her seeking leave to get medication and later asking for time off when her mother’s condition worsened. However, her requests were refused, followed by questions about her possible resignation and orders to provide an official termination letter when her duties were sorted.

 

The woman details the exchange, asking…

 

“What did I do wrong? In such situations, should one not be considerate and understanding? Isn’t it too much?”

 

She also shared screenshots of the chat that demonstrated her superior’s lack of compassion. The conversation after she had taken sick leave in the morning read…

 

“Could I have more leave, my mother is not doing well, she may not survive today or tomorrow?”

 

Her heartless supervisor responded with…

 

“No!”

I want to have a similar situation Once and the boss wouldn’t let me take leave I told the boss I only have one mother I can always get another job so I spent the last week with my mother before she passed by the week after that, the boss called me and asked me when I was coming back my reply was I found the better job paying a lot more money go figure

I have a friend who worked at a hotel. Crappy place. His girlfriend and mother of his children literally died sleeping next to him. His evil beeatch of a boss didn't give him any time off to deal with it.

 

Brutal.

Her boss allowed time off paid leave, made sure she had transport to and from the hospital, sent a colleague from work to her home everyday with food and drinks.

And took care of her two children while in hospital.

But he makes a valid point. What if she’s a regular “my xyz is sick, can’t come to work today” kind of worker or she’s not good at her job. Not often you see people rushing to social media posting such things. Maybe she’s a trouble maker and a liability to her boss. Not saying this is the case here, just possibility.

Employee treatment: Hotel manager suspended for cruelty to grieving worker

Following a social media uproar about an employee being denied leave during her mother’s final days, a renowned hotel has suspended the manager involved, known as “Kob”, pending an internal investigation into employee treatment within the workforce. The management also expressed condolences to the grieving employee.

 

A Facebook post showing chat messages between the worker and her supervisor sparked outrage online. When the employee requested time off to care for her dying mother, her supervisor “Kob” refused, asserting that regardless of the situation, the employee must come back to work. Tragically, her mother passed away, prompting the supervisor not only to display indifference but also to ask whether she planned to resign. If settled, she could write her letter of resignation.

 

This harsh employee treatment incident has sparked conversations about the shocking treatment of staff in the wake of her mother’s death, and what the law offers in the protection of workers’ rights, reported Sanook.


The hotel in question, the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort, responded via a Facebook post addressing the situation.

Poor generalisation. My accounting staff had an accident, surgery and recovery for 4 weeks. Company paid her surgery and hospitalization. She will report back for work next Monday. 

Was she Thai? if you think thats bad you should see the way they treat Burmese in the hotel business,

It now seems that senior management have stepped in, so it's reasonable to assume they consider the actions could well have been over the top. 

Not so fondly recall this type of attitude. Attended my Uncle's funeral and so was docked pay. Grandparents covered but not Uncles nor Aunts. I explained all my Grandparents were long since dead and that this Uncle was like a Grandfather in our family. Additionally, my Father was named for him and I from my Father. Nope, not policy. So, I stated that the next time a relative died I would claim it was a Grandparent. The Superintendent said he hoped I would be more professional. I retorted that I had hoped he would have been. He would move on while I remained 41 years as a community educator. A most worthy way to spend my life's breath but you would be correct to observe I retired to Thailand as I cannot afford to be retired in my own country. Later, I would help start a union to resist such paternalistic attitudes.

Many years ago in the UK, I went to work and explained I won't be coming to work for a few days as my mother had just died, they sacked me there and then.

I was not in the mood for come backs, I was close to tears talking of my mums death as it was I was only 27.

Ironically it was a cleaning company called UNEEDUS. 

At last a name & shame story!  Is the draconian law slipping a little bit.  Can I now name the dozens of companies who have never replied to an email because it was written in English?

Perhaps. Just putting out there may be reasons for denying leave.

I hope the hotel will be asking the same of the supervisor.
