Prime Minister-elect Srettha Thavisin held talks with representatives of eight airlines, Airports of Thailand (AoT) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) today (Monday), seeking cooperation to boost tourist arrivals during the last quarter of this year.

The prime minister reminded those at the meeting that the fourth quarter is peak tourist season and is important in stimulating the economy. As such, the government is keen to take steps now to prepare the country to accommodate the arrivals of tourists, which are expected to spike.

Kerati Kitmanawat, president of AOT, said that the eight airlines will report to the prime minister and his team today on the outcome of discussions about how to accommodate more flights from China at Thailand’s six main airports.

What will he do?? big discounts on international flights?? The world is at this moment trying to discourage flying.. but maybe he missed that.. Nearby holidays and using trains and electric vehicles are promoted to use instead of airplanes..

Was just thinking... set 100 baht maximum fare on plane tickets? Or give a condo to every tourist?

By reducing the arrival tax applied to airlines on the condition they prove that they have also reduced the final ticket price paid by the passenger,  could help.

He is a businessman before being a politician. He will take hopefully and fast the right steps to make life easier for tourists/retirees wanting long stay with less immigration orvisa hassle. If not just to bad as the money will go elsewhere in Asia.

Would love to know what the airports charge for slots and landing and airline handling fees in Thailand.

When you buy a ticket, there is usually an entry for these cumulative costs. It is a substantial amount, but far from the crazy charges in Europe. Example, if you fly for miles, it's not free  but you still pay hundreds (euros) for destinations in Europe. I never did it for domestic flights in Thailand so I don't know but I suspect much less.

Thailand's tourism does not need a boost with cheaper airfares. The medieval immigration, its endless and counter productive bureaucracy and - more often than not - inability to speak anything else but Thai ........

Clean up the mess on visas and define a clear policy on which countries needs a visa after a visa-free period of, say, 45 days - no "tourist" stays longer than that. All other non-workers fall into a second category; bring proof of financial means and health insurance against a fee of, say THB 5'000, which covers the visa and an automatic multiple re-entry permit. Forget the 90 days reporting joke; millions of Thais do NOT live at their registered address.

Push banks to allow non-residents to open a normal savings account with an ATM-fee as some 30 years ago, when tourists parked their holiday money and withdrew it whenever and wherever they needed cash.

Do away with two-tier pricing (Thais 20 Baht, Foreigners 400 Baht to pass through Khao Yai National Park) as it creates a clear message of "we do not want foreigners".

Last not least, run all cartoons and kiddies programs in their original language (Japanese or English); within 15 years every child will speak and understand at least two languages - free of charge - which will be more than welcome by the tourism operators. When growing up with two or more languages, any additional language comes much easier.

All this of course only, if you want the dreaded alien money WITH service as, quite obviously there is little to no alien cash if the latter choses to go elsewhere and Thailand certainly made sure, that millions of non-Thais have looked and found very acceptable if not better alternatives ????

I am not interested in addressing any of the problems that existed long before Covid, nor finding solutions to the reasons why tourism is down, nor why tourism appears to have been willfully sabotaged by the army. I am just asking you to maybe lower airfares a little bit, so we can attract some of those millions of lost tourists. Very few Europeans and Americans are coming, and we seem to be attracting only Malaysians, some Chinese, Arabs, Indians and Russians. That is limited. So, can you lower fares from Europe? OK? Will you think about that? Pretty please. Do it for me, ok?

Remember it's PM-elect who currently has no authority until royal endorsement. And caretaker PM Prawit can't authorize new budget expenditures, So take whatever talks occur with "a grain of salt."
