Tourism operators in Chiang Mai brace for high season

Chiang Mai officials and tourism operators have met to discuss preparation for the forthcoming high season, including measures to deal with crime. Tourism operators in the province have welcomed PM Srettha Thavisin’s economic stimulus plans and the proposal to offer free visas to travellers from China and India.

 

Chiang Mai governor Worawit Chaisawat says the free visa proposal will help boost arrival numbers, with both countries offering direct flights to Chiang Mai. He adds that officials and private businesses are now focused on how best to welcome visitors, suppress crime, and ensure tourists’ safety.

 

According to the report, visitor numbers are expected to increase this coming high season and Worawit has asked Chiang Mai residents to be good hosts. He has called for tourists to be supported if they run into any difficulties, while also urging residents to report any tourists they see causing trouble.

Oh boy, will they be disappointed. Bracing for 3-4 weeks high season around christmas new year.

 

I admire their optimism though, less so their reality radar.

Tourist season is from November to April and  July - August.

We all know that. We also know how few that actually arrive in high season, except Peak time around christmas and new year holidays, 10 dec - 10 jan.

 

5 Years pre covid, high season in tourist cities became shorter and shorter year by year.

 

By end of January many hotels reported less than 50% occupancy, dropping weekly thereafter. So much for high season.  Dreams vs reality.

The hosts definitely outstayed their unwelcoming attitude. Do away with the multi-tier pricing, call tourists visitors rather than "alien" or "dirty farang" and go, how neighbouring countries do it. 
If Cambodia would not be wild west, Laos would not be a slave state of China and the army would be out of Burma, then Thailand would be having even less tourists. 
Do away with this ridiculous bureaucracy making every government official sooooo important, grant the visa-free countries 45 days instead of 30 and the countries requiring visas to be processed professionally. Presently you can wait for weeks to get an appointment for a visa in certain Thai embassies and consulates abroad while some Thai representations neither answer the phone nor reply to email. 

The shorter end of the stick is always with the electorate taxpayer ????

Most likely you not in the tourist business as numbers are up compared to last year which was slow after Covid. 

Before Covid numbers were going down a bit but still booming business for many operators.
