Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has ordered officials in Chatuchak district to undertake a thorough check of a warehouse storing electric car batteries, which burned down in a fire late Wednesday night.

He said similar checks will be ordered on similar warehouses and showrooms selling electric cars and motorcycles adding that, as more people are turning to hybrid and electric cars and motorcycles, it is necessary for fire fighters and emergency workers to be well prepared to deal with chemical fires caused by the batteries.

The fire last night broke out at a building at the entrance of Vibhavadi Rangsit Soi 22. The ground floor of the building is a showroom for electric motorcycles under construction and the fourth floor was used to store motorcycles and batteries. The second and third floors were used to store food supplements.

This topic is bound to cause a lot of debate but I think the batteries in electric cars are designed and tested to be much much safer than the cheap batteries in cheap no name scooters.
