It really is remarkably easy to make your own.

Dory fillets (3 pieces for B100)

A couple of potatoes (B25)

Packet of batter mix (B15)

Small can of beer to make the batter (B40)

Deep fried in the wok.

Fish and chip supper, with a glass of beer for B110.

Do you cook the fish or the chips in the wok first?

Save on the batter mix, use flour, and then a BIG can of beer.

I peel and "chip" the potatoes, then fry them. Whilst they are cooking mix the batter (about 1/3 the can of beer) dunk the fish in the batter, then once the chips are done bung the fish in.

I'd egg coat it and roll in panko bread crumbs. Big C does something like this.

Big C filet used to be b49 on sale now b69+ regular. I'll toast some bread add lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. Semi healthy fast food. Two huge sandwiches

The battered fish might be a heart attack on a plate but it's delicious and red lion does do a nice one

Don't the chips go soggy while the fish is cooking?

If the chips look soggy then another 60 seconds whilst the fish is draining - or I keep them warm in a small electric oven.

Wouldn't a fish with more solid meat like halibut or salmon make a better choice for fried fish. I had it once in Canada for Pub Grub, to die for.

Only thing worse you could do to that flavorless white fish, is deep fry it.

And what's the price of halibut here, if you can get it, and most of the salmon I have bought here was absolute rubbish. panagasus is also very bad, no taste.

You're right about halibut but salmon here in Thailand is doable. I'm not a fish expert but regularly eat salmon from Makro. I've had some soggy fried fish I think was dory, they come in huge pieces which makes bad finger food and what's with mushy peas.

Cod or other white cold water fish is virtually  unobtainable in rural Chiang Rai province. Even in the city, 30 odd Km away, it is rare to find it on sale.

Cooked carefully, and with attention paid to a good beer batter, it is passable.
