Thai Immigration Crackdown on Unauthorized Migrant Workers in Restaurant Raids

On September 21, 2023, the Immigration Office in Maha Sarakham Province, Thailand, launched a crackdown on undocumented foreign laborers working secretly in local restaurants.

 

Led by Pol. Col. Supol Sripak of the Immigration Bureau, along with his team, they conducted operations under the Immigration Act of 1979 and performed X-ray scans in the area.

On the evening of September 19, 2023, at 6:30 PM, investigative units inspected eateries along the Somthawin Canal in the Maha Sarakham Municipality.

 

Officers discovered foreign individuals resembling migrant workers employed within these establishments. Officials requested their identification documents and passports, finding that five individuals had no valid documentation, while two claimed Laotian citizenship.

These individuals were brought to the Immigration Office in Maha Sarakham for further verification through the immigration database, revealing that they had entered the Kingdom as tourists with type "O" visas but had covertly taken up employment without proper work permits.

 

The employers were apprehended for hiring foreign laborers without permits, as per the Immigration Act of 2017, aimed at regulating foreign labor.

The government's policy of opening its doors to foreign tourists has prompted authorities to ensure that businesses and accommodations follow the law when hosting foreign visitors or hiring foreign workers.

They have encouraged reporting of any suspicious activities related to foreign nationals and provided contact numbers for assistance and guidance.

If it's anything like Phuket then Thai people wont do them jobs, give them a permit and let them work for them it's about survival and they are getting paid peanuts, life is bad enough for some of them,

While Thailand is seeking to have many millions of tourists coming to visit all the while not acknowledging and not addressing the problems that there is acute shortage of workers throughout the kingdom and cheap labour at that too, this is the case of 'you can't have your cake and eat it too'...

You needed all that theatre, Photoshop banners printed, press called, for some kitchen-hands sweating it out in some back alley kitchen for 50 baht a day. Look at how puffed out your chests are, so proud, saving Thailand from the wrong people washing dishes.

Very common here in Pattaya. I had a girlfriend who worked at a local restaurant and she told me that the cook was from Cambodia and another employee was Laotian. Both were being paid below the minimum wage.

Try this.

Foreign laborers found without permits likely to being trafficked into Thailand are immediately given permits for which the employers MUST pay the prevailing wage, including backpay.  Migrants become legal, productive members of Thai society and trafficking loses its purpose.
