Officer Killed in Tragic Migrant Smuggling Crash Incident
File photo for reference only A tragic event unfolded late yesterday in Kamphaeng Phet when a pickup truck, involved in an illegal migrant smuggling operation, collided with a police checkpoint vehicle, leading to the death of Officer Nattawat Phawatratchapong. The operation, based on a tip-off, was led by Opas Khongmueang, the Provincial Police Commander, to intercept smugglers transporting foreign workers from Wang Chao. The smugglers used three vehicles: two pickups including a Ford as a lookout, and another with a canopy carrying migrants. The police had set up a checkpoint strategically, anticipating their route. At around 11.25pm, the Ford driven by Niphan was spotted, prompting the police to initiate their blockade using a patrol car and a spike strip. Moments later, the Nissan pickup managed to dodge the strip, but the third vehicle with a canopy, driven by Songpol, struck a stationary police car, leading to the deadly crash. Officer Nattawat, known as Moo Arm, was ejected into a lamp post and tragically died from the impact. Songpol tried to escape but was captured following a pursuit. Niphan, unaware of this, returned to assist and was also apprehended. In total, 19 illegal migrants were found in the vehicles. During questioning, the suspects admitted to transporting migrants for 8,000 baht (US$233) per vehicle from Wang Chao to Uthai Thani province. Songpol claimed a lack of visibility due to the lead vehicle's sudden swerve led to the crash and his subsequent panic-driven escape attempt. Following the incident, Opas inspected the scene and ensured that Officer Nattawat's funeral would be conducted with full honours. The investigation continues as the police gather all necessary evidence to press comprehensive charges against the suspects involved in this tragic incident. -- 2024-12-18 -

How Has Thailand’s New Income Tax Law Affected Your Spending Habits?
Like all the other past hare brained governmental brain farts intended to grab even more money out of the pockets of the people who come here and do nothing but spend money, this is just another disastrous misstep. And just wait until all the foreigners in the first three months of next year start showing up at their local TRD tax office to file a tax statement. Probably the majority of the people working in those government offices don't speak English, let alone Chinese, Arabic, Russian, etc. Not only that, many of the foreigners will be showing up with all kinds of financial documents written in various different foreign languages. I can imagine not only is this going to be a major headache, and an extra unwanted burden for the government employees who don't benefit at all from any of this, there will probably be a fair number of blowups with foreigners losing it when the locals don't understand their financial reporting questions. You will be sure to get a bunch irate foreigners souring the milk since emotions can easily turn hot when it's all about matters of money. -
