For some reason, while doing absolutely nothing, this term SLOPPY SECONDS just popped into my head.

 

And I began to ponder upon its derivation.

 

As far as I can tell, SLOPPY SECONDS was used for about the first time in this comic book item:

The English Language is one of the most versatile and beautiful languages on Earth.

 

How do you feel about this term, sloppy seconds?

 

I am not particularly enamored with it.

 

Of course, during war time, if one is fighting in the trenches, such as the trenches written about by Remarque, one must have been glad to have sloppy seconds or thirds.

 

No doubt, men were hungry in the trenches.

 

A second or third helping of anything was a luxury.
