Biden slams Trump for Capitol riot in 2024 campaign speech

In his first campaign speech of 2024, President Joe Biden cast his likely election opponent, Donald Trump, as a fundamental threat to American democracy.

"Whether democracy is still America's sacred cause is the most urgent question of our time," Mr Biden said.

"It's what the 2024 election is all about," he added.

The speech saw Mr Biden returning to a theme he has invoked over and over in recent years.

This time, he explicitly drew a line to the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol to make his case.

That day, Mr Trump's supporters violently stormed Congress to stop lawmakers from certifying the presidential election results for Mr Biden, just weeks before he was set to take office.

 

Mr Trump, the current frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, frequently repeats the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

The former president has also attempted to reframe the 6 January attack as a "beautiful day." He has referred to the individuals who participated as "patriots" and political prisoners, and vowed to pardon them if he returns to the White House.

Taking direct aim at this rhetoric, Mr Biden accused Mr Trump of trying to "steal history", attacking his rival by name repeatedly.

"Trump's mob wasn't a peaceful protest, it was a violent assault," Mr Biden said. "They were insurrectionists, not patriots. They were not there to uphold the Constitution, they were there to destroy the Constitution."

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Jason Miller, a senior Trump campaign adviser, wrote on X that Mr Biden "has given up on running an issues-based campaign for 2024".

 

"Rather than help those suffering from Bidenomics or our porous southern border, Biden plans on weaponising government against his leading political opponent," Mr Miller wrote.

Mr Biden has returned to the theme of preserving democracy again and again.

In 2020, he campaigned as the candidate capable of restoring America to normalcy. Before the 2022 midterms, Mr Biden described that election as a "battle for the soul of this nation".

On Friday the venue in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, a key site in the American Revolutionary War, was chosen to underscore the themes of Mr Biden's address.

First I reject the contention that Bjden has nothing positive to say concerning the issue why they should elect him. If you really believe that he has not, you  are ether not paying attentions, or your definition of " positive" is different than most peoples.

But here's the difference. 

 

We disagree with Biden voters, sure.  But we don't accuse them of having half a brain, or being deplorable.  And we don't try to bar them from voting for their candidate, even if he is demonstrably crooked and has dementia.

Unlike other nations who derive  their cohesion from a common ethnic identity the US  being a nation of immigrants derives it's cohesion from a tacit trust in it's institutions and that for the most part they work fairly for all. It is the binding core in what we consider the USA to be,

trump has done more to degrade such institutions than anyone and anything in the history of the United States of America, 

   There are few  things that I don't like about Biden and if better options existed I would opt for such, but all the negatives attributed to Biden pale in comparison to those exhibited by trump.

He represents an existential danger to the concept on America, where the undesirable elements attributed to Biden do not. 

  I believe it was Sun Tzu in the art of war who said (please correct me if I am wrong).  

In the absence of no good options  the least harmful option is the best.

As I stated, I don't.  Candide's link was the first time I ever visited the Pravda website.  Based on what I found, I don't ever have to go back.

Not hardly.  I still remember when my Russian grandfather went to visit his brothers and sisters in the old country.  Mid '70s, after he'd been gone over 60 years.  We asked him how it was and he just said "Quit complaining and pay your taxes.  We have it good here".

Regarding Biden, my opinion aligns with 58% of my countrymen.  And I believe in the democratic process.  Not in lawfare. 

 

But then, until earlier this year, I lived in the USA for 4 years.  Most of the guys posting here haven't been on the ground, living there, in years (if ever).   If I read only the MSM, I'd probably think he was the 2nd coming of Jesus.  I know better, from personal experience.

Something else interesting from this speech was how Biden is 'handled'. Jill now comes on stage to take him by the hand and show him where to exit. So he can totter off without looking lost and confused.  

 

Also that the uber serious mantra of "beware January 6" is becoming an accepted part of the leftist catechism. It is becoming a yearly event, marked by furrowed brows and serious head nodding.

 

I must say though, it does show the strength of America's institutions that it could survive both a Trump AND a Biden presidency and stay intact.  Bravo my cousins!

i tend to stay away from political arguments/debates. i never voiced a comment on brexit and so far i have stayed away from this farce in the united states. first reason why i never discussed brexit... i am not a brit and it is none of my business. about the usa, i am a dual american/canadian citizen but i do not vote in the states, so once again not my business and the biggest reason is that politics are divisive and the best way to make enemies that otherwise could easily be friends. that said, if i were to vote i would think twice about biden. when a leader cant stand on his own achievements and needs to use weak tactics like reminding everyone what trump did and how he is a bad bad bad man then thats it for me. WHOEVER talks like this and is supposed to be a great leader makes me look at him in total disbelief. i think the dems need to find a new head
