Honda Giorno vs Yamaha Grand Filano

Looking at a small scooter for city & market, around town, with occasional trips, say 30 KM out of town. Want enough speed to use ring highways without getting run down. Ease of use for girlfriend is paramount. I realize a Honda Wave, Dream or  Click, would be cheaper, more efficient & more power. Want something more stylish that SHE will like, but I will be happy with.

The Grand filano is an excellent bike with a lot of space under the seat. But i must say that i realy like the Honda. A good mix between the Filano and the Vespa. I have no experience with driving the Honda but im sure it will be good.

I do not know either bike but I have had bikes from both manufacturers.

My first bike in Thailand was a Yamaha. It was OK - but quite a few problems over the years. Nothing major but starting it was a problem if I did not ride it every day.

Honda - no problems at all. 15 years old and going strong.

We are involved with a number of bike rental companies on the island and they all prefer Honda.

Honda Giorno.

The misses just bought one.  it's a POS.

Two up, the passenger is very easy tipped off the back. ( outrageous design)

The clocks are black and white, very difficult to see in day light.

Ignition switch is just overly complicated incorporating seat opening and fuel flap opening. ( total donkey design)

Not a comfortable ride two up.

Just to top it all off, it needs to go into the shop to have a oil pump gear replaced.

because of a manufacturing defect, ( nice one Honda)

 

You only get one electronic key fob, so 3000 baht  for a spare one.  

maybe that's the norm now days, but bad if you ask me.

 

All that said , it does ride ok with one person and does handle ok.

but two up. no way.

Those electronic key fobs are under 600 baht not 3,000, i bought one from Honda.  The oil pump gear fault effects many bikes, i changed mine on 160 Click, 300 baht, I didn't bother going to dealer

Right the dealer wanted 3000 for key fob. ok.

Should you take a bike to a Honda dealer for a warranty defect, answer is yes.

She likes both, but I'm the one putting out the Baht. Will be using too, so looking at what might be, could be, better. They are close enough that price is not an issue.

I have a 17 year old Wave, 130KM,+  that refuses to die. I love it but, it is time push it off a balconey, uh er, get rid of it.  Yes a Wave or a Click is more economical, more bang for the buck but not really looking for that at this point.

Given both of our ages, this might be the last bike we buy. I have a bigger bike btw. Then again we use the Honda City for touring these days. This trend will likely continue & expand as we age. Looking at the Filano & Giorno, as a morning market, morning gym & swim, around town, put put. Not going to be putting major KM's on it.  However want to look stylish doing it. Want something that goes with our mirrored shades. Even old **ckers need to be cool, or at least think that we are.

Bought a Giorno ABS last month very pleased with it all the electronic bit takes a bit of getting used to though but it goes and stops like stink compared to my 2012 scoopy liverpool edition 🤔

I have just looked at the specs for both.

Is weight an issue?

A friend has a Chinese wife - about 55 kilos wet. She only wants a lightweight bike. Scoopy is too heavy!!! (91 kilos)

Honda is 81 kilos.

Yamaha is 99 kilos.

I prefer a heavier bike myself.

Well,  if you want stylish, why not get what they are all trying to imitate.

A Vespa or Lambretta. they cost a little bit more. but look much better.

Hondas are serviceable everywhere, therefore most practical. Has she considered the Honda Lead? If not and it were me, personally I’d go with the Giorno.

Things I learned on Friday.

Honda has a great, or inflated,  reputation, in Thailand  --- However the two best bikes I ever owned were Suzuki. Long ago and not in Thailand.

The Giorno has a better lock & even an alarm(!) although low volume & squeely. Better replacement of electronic fob if lost with the Giorno.

Red, may (or may not), make a motorcycle more popular with thieves.

I need not one but TWO, Certificates of Residency, (grrrr) if they take my Wave as trade in. Technically I am both selling a bike and buying a bike. A Certificate of Residency needed for both. Still one shop[ was offering twice what I would have accepted for the Wave, so not a problem. 

Yet back in Nakorn Nowhere, I do not recall needing a Cert of R for either of the bikes I purchased in the wastelands. New requirement or depends on the jongwat you are living in? Always mysteries in Thailand
