Suphan Buri provincial authorities have been instructed by the governor to tighten up safety controls on the about 10 firework factories still operating in the province, to prevent a repetition of last week’s explosion, which killed 23 people.

Governor Natthapat Suwanprateep said that most of these factories do not have an operating license from the Industrial Works Department and they usually hire villagers, who have no knowledge of or experience in the handling of the volatile substances used in the making of pyrotechnics.

Most such factories are not required to be licensed, because they are small, hire only a handful of people and are equipped with machinery of a limited size.

Amazing safety first Thailand... working on the cheap.

This is irrelevant.

What is relevant is the amount of hazardous material, how it is stored and training of staff in handling such material.

There should also be prominently displayed, warnings about cigarette smoking and use of construction hand tools like angle grinders etc.

These things need to be mandatory before a licence can be granted.

Canal is the best option  maybe not the cheapest option that way they would have to construct two container unloading facilities, of course some see it as dividing Thailand in two.

Why weren't safety controls already in effect?

Who is responsible within the local government for inspecting these factories?

Why aren't they doing their job?

Who is responsible within the company for safety inspections? Fireworks in and of itself is a very dangerous thing to manufacture, why would any company that's manufacturing explosives not have very thorough safety inspections?

Will anybody be held to account, will the owner of the company be jailed for manslaughter? It does look like intentionally neglect.
