The Success of a Salesman

Back in October, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin argued that he does not merely want people to see him as a prime minister, but as a businessman. “I’m a salesman. I have to sell Thailand’s great products and build investors’ confidence. It’s my duty and mission as the No 1 salesman of the country,” he told a forum hosted by Krungthep Turakij.

The “national salesman” personal branding is not necessarily a new concept. Indeed, it was most recently used by former commerce minister Jurin Laksanawisit in the previous government. What does feel new, of course, is the intense focus that any prime minister has given on being the salesman. Former prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was temperamentally unsuited to the role, and in the past nine years he did not make his presence on the international stage felt. Srettha’s proclivity towards being a national salesman is something that can be welcomed.

It is unfortunate, then, that in this early stage of his tenure, Srettha has already seemingly made one mistake that has damaged his ability to be an effective national salesman.

Earlier this month, Srettha announced that China has agreed to waive travel visas for Thai nationals beginning in March, following Thailand’s unilateral decision to waive visas for Chinese travelers last year in a bid to boost tourism.

If loser or not, that can be right. Maybe he is. However, any PM in any country will be a kind of salesman. Their job is to engage in discussions with other nations, gain their trust and interest in buying what the country has on offer as well as investing in the country. That is actually describing the work of a salesman selling in the country and it´s products to other countries to be able to better the economy. Of course he also have duties like you describe.

The last time the UK had a national salesman, aka Chairman of UK Plc, it was His Buffoon Highness the Duke of York. Could be worst.

I'm glad he finally admitted to being a salesman, because that is exactly what he is, a slippery, slick peddler of who knows what.

He is attempting to sell a bill of goods to the people of Thailand, but I don't think very many are buying it. Maybe he's having more success on the international stage. He must seem quite impressive compared to his predecessor.

Those socks. Felonious choice.

What you are describing is the work of the "Minister of Trade".

That's where he belongs

Not PM.

The visa announcement was from both sides. Bit too hasty to draw conclusion.

Thailand has live in a bubble for a decade whereby Prayut limited overseas sojourn due to his lack of vision, language and competency. Srettha meeting global corporate leaders and governments and pitching for FDI should  be applauded and not doubted.

What are Thailands great products apart from silk, second rate rice, those wooden frogs and bar girls?

Still wearing Christmas socks in January!

Yes, he's so successful that his Lord and Master (not) living in the police hospital presidential suite has already decided to ditch him.

Medical & Dental tourism if you have insurance ........................got the UK NHS beat.

To my knowledge he has not concluded any business with anybody. No matter, he won't be PM for very long.

Hit the nail with the "if you have insurance " bit!

But some of us can not get insurance due to our age, or it is ridiculously expensive.

Most insurers have "pre existing conditions nor covered" clauses, so in my, and many other people's cases - no point. Also, some insurers will not pay out if you have had the same type of claim before - e.g. I had a root canal filling and  porcelain crown treatment and a few years later had the same dental problem - the insurance company    would not pay the claim as '"You have made a similar claim before".

The Conservative Party have been trying to do away with the NHS for years and replace it with private insurance (for obvious reasons - more money for the Big Boys) The reason why it is in such dire straits IMHO is:-

(a) Underfunding and underpayment at the lower end of the nursing scale.

(b) Too many immigrants to the country claiming benefits - including free NHS treatment.
