I used to ask my great-grandmother when she was still around, why they didn't teach us anything about the old country. She would give me this look, and tell me "the reason we never taught you about the place we came from, is because the place we came from was the most horrific country on earth, it was the most destitute, horrible, oppressive place and we were thrilled to finally get out of there and leave it behind. That's why we don't teach you about the old country, the old country doesn't exist for us". Good post - my ex mother in law was from Estonia - she travelled from there to the UK on her own with 4 young chidren in tow in the early 40's. I didn't need to ask her what she thought of Russians! My own experience of them is similar to yours. I once held a door open for a Russian family and not one of them smiled or acknowledged the gesture - the one I assumed to be the father actually scowled at me when I sarcastically said to their backs "Thank you"! I'd hazard a guess the barber wasn't paying any attention to what the Russian was asking him to do and was just cutting the guys hair as he saw fit. I even picked up some of the language, to a conversational level. A few of the Russians I worked with were incredibly intelligent, cultured and polite. However I found that 98% of the general population were barbarians. Its a society, for the most part, without any social graces. Pushing and shoving is the norm. Obscenities and vulgar language are the norm - even little old ladies use extreme vulgarities in the street. Road rage is off the clock. Russians are always ready to jump out of their cars and start fighting. Another thing to keep in mind is that the overwhelming proportion of Russians in Thailand support Putin.
