The number of tourists per year is very different from the number of passenger flights per year. In 2023 there were 53 million passengers.

Yes indeed - TAT counts anyone walking/driving over the border with Malaysia as a tourist. I guess technically they are a visitor, but they are not a tourist. IMO TAT does not count all the people doing border hops, versus international visitors, because they can pad the numbers out and get all that bonus money 🙂

The thread is about passenger traffic via Suvarnabhumi Airport, not tourism across the Malaysian border.

LAX was bussing in 2007

Last flight on Emirates in 2023 we were bused to the plane at the Dubai airport--after a very long walk, several changes of floors, more walking, a train ride, and, finally the bus to the plane.  That was no fun.

What I meant to add was that TAT should count only the international visitors that arrive direct though Swampy airport (and the others like Phuket and Don Mueang). Swampy gets the majority of Thailand's international visitors, and that is why they are talking about a billion baht project to 'fix' Swampy.

Below are two links showing passenger traffic at Swampy and other AOT airports. The first link shows traffic by year and breaks out domestic, international and transit. The different AOT airport stats (there are 8 AOT airports) are on different tabs of each download. Swampy does generate a majority of the traffic but the volumes of international traffic at other AOT airports should not be under estimated. Similarly, the volumes of international passenger traffic at non-AOT owned airports should also not be underestimated.
