Zebra crossings mean absolutely nothing in Thailand. That's a fact based on my personal experience.

The only way to stop this madness is crossings with stop lights and cameras that work, and heavy fines or confiscation of vehicle.  Thailand is lawless so crazies do exactly what they want and don’t get punished.,

Agree.........................even if the vehicles stop the bikes tend not to & they all move off against the red light when no more people are crossing.

This is what happens when one comes from the countryside, in China, where one is used to walking in the middle of the road.

Sad, really.

But, if you have ever been to China, in the countryside, then you will see many people, typically, walking in the middle of the road.

Everyone knows this.....

First and Last Day in Thailand turned out to be less than an auspicious day.

Where did you read he came from the countryside? Or was that something you dreamed up and wrote as fact?

Will there be similar public anger and protests at the scene, as happened when a Swiss man kicked a woman in Phuket? Or as he was Chinese and the driver was probably Thai* it doesn't matter?

*probably, based on the number of Thais compared to foreigners in Thailand.

He made the mistake of using a zebra crossing, it acts like a magnet for some drivers and you are easily seen. I've even seen police cars weaving around people crossing, nobody stops.

Zebra crossings in much of the world just convey permission to cross with no fear of a jaywalking violation.  They don't convey right of way

Exactly. But many pedestrians, including some on this thread, assume right of way and cross without looking. As a driver I see it all the time. I personally think it's insane how many people cross the road without looking and just trust drivers to stop for them. Most drivers nowadays are on their phones and don't see anything.

At many traffic lights in the Pattaya area there  is a designated  Red area on the road  for Bikes only to stop when waiting at the Red light,  and other Vehicles seem to obey that rule as many Cars , Trucks,  never enter that Red zone,    but Cars, and Bikes, never seem to obey that rule when it comes to Pedestrian crossings, especially outside BIG C extra on Pattaya Klang

The road rules in Thailand are nothing more than a laugh,%90÷ don't  understand road safety or care but then again what rules, you can buy a license without doing a test or knowing how to drive.

A Chinese tourist has been killed by a fast moving pickup truck as he was using a zebra crossing on the way back to his hotel on Bang Na Garden Road in Bang Bo district of Samut Prakan province last night.

A Thai guide said that the victim was among a group of Chinese tourists who arrived in Bangkok Friday morning and he led the group on a sight-seeing tour of Bangkok.

The victim left his hotel room last night to buy something at a convenience store just across the road from his hotel. As he was returning to his hotel, a pickup truck, travelling at high speed and with its siren blaring, failed to stop, struck the victim on the crossing and drove off.

EMTs soon arrived at the scene of the accident, administered CPR and used a defibrillator to try to save the life of the victim, but to no avail. He died at the scene.

Witnesses say the truck driver later stopped at a nearby convenience store for a while and then drove away.

Tourist police said that the pickup truck used a fake license plate.

Some people will speed up if you cross. I had that happen the other day. I had to jog to get across in time. It's people that have a lot of anger inside. It comes from bottling up emotions and acting all happy when you don't feel that way.
