The Russian Republic of Chechnya has implemented a ban on music deemed to be too fast or too slow, with all musical, vocal, and choreographic works now required to adhere to a tempo ranging from 80 to 116 beats per minute (BPM). The decision, announced by Minister of Culture Musa Dadayev and approved by Chechen leader Ramzan Akhmatovich Kadyrov, aims to ensure that Chechen artistic creations align with the region's cultural heritage and musical rhythm.

This ban will impact various musical genres such as pop and techno, restricting the range of permissible tempos for compositions. Chechnya, located in the North Caucasus region, is predominantly Muslim and has been under Kadyrov's leadership since 2007. During his tenure, Kadyrov has been criticized for suppressing dissent and perpetrating human rights abuses, including violence against LGBTQ+ individuals.

Reports of targeted violence and persecution against gay men in Chechnya have drawn international condemnation, with allegations of detentions, murders, and denial of the existence of LGBTQ+ individuals by Kadyrov. The pro-Kremlin leader has also worked to quell the Chechen separatist movement and has been sanctioned by the US State Department for his involvement in human rights violations, including torture and extrajudicial killings.
