Al Jazeera Shutdown - Israeli Cabinet Approves Closure of Al Jazeera's Facilities

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel announced on Sunday that his cabinet has voted to close down the operations of Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based news channel, within Israel.

This widely anticipated move might affect Israel's diplomatic ties with Qatar, which has been instrumental in mediating truce talks between Israel and Hamas. Journalism groups have criticized the closure as a setback for press freedom.

Netanyahu, announcing the decision on social media, previously labeled Al Jazeera a "Hamas mouthpiece" and expressed intentions to shut it down. Last month, Israeli lawmakers passed a bill that allows the government to temporarily shut down foreign media operations if they are seen as threats to national security.

The Qatari government, which funds Al Jazeera, has not yet responded to the closure. The relationship between Netanyahu's government and Al Jazeera has been strained, particularly because of the network’s prominent coverage of the ongoing conflict in Gaza that started in October. During the conflict, several journalists from Al Jazeera were killed.

Netanyahu stated on X, formerly known as Twitter, "The government under my leadership has decided unanimously: The incitement channel Al Jazeera will be shut down in Israel." It remains unclear whether the closure is permanent and how it will affect Al Jazeera’s reporting in areas like Gaza and the West Bank.

Al Jazeera has not made any immediate comments on its website regarding the situation.

Al Jazeera has so far managed to REPORT the happenings in Gaza with of course sympathy for the Palestinians without spreading lies and speculation.

In contrast the mainstream media has followed the line laid down by their governments, burnt babies, raped bodies, mutilated corpses and more horrors with photographic proof unavailable as it is too horrific to print.

This conflict should be stopped immediately and it can be by halting the endless flow of weaponry but of course that will affect the bottom line of the suppliers who are being paid by the taxpayer.

Thats just my thoughts, War is dangerous to ALL .

This turned out to be a lie by Al-Jazeera .

Al Jazeera even live streamed the Hamas rocket misfiring and hitting the Hospital , but the y still blamed Israel for the bombing

Good for them, a bit late in the day though, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain & Egypt had already banned Al Jazeera.

Egypt accused Al Jazeera of being a mouthpiece for the Islamist group, banning the broadcaster and arresting a number of its journalists. In 2017, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain launched a boycott of Qatar over charges it supported terrorism, an accusation Qatar denied

Israel purports to be a democracy that upholds the principles of democracy, of which freedom of the press is one principle.

I hate to see Israel being accused of suppressing freedom of the press.

I think Israel could completely destroy such allegations by permitting the world’s news outlets to send journalists into Gaza and r er port on what they witness, independent of Israel or Hamas.

I’m at a loss why this offends you so.

So Brian.

Permitting the world’s news agencies to send journalists into Gaza to report on what they witness there independently of Israel or Hamas.

A good idea?

Did they stop the BBC from reporting there? Why did the BBC decide to leave?

You are conflating the right to enter with the right to choose to enter and the right to choose to leave.

Choice is one of those things that are inseparable from freedom.

A free press has the right to enter and the right to leave.

Good. They are no more than the terrorist propaganda arm for Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, who played direct role in Oct 7 massacre.

As I understand it, Israel is not stopping Al Gorezeera from reporting or denying them access to Gaza. They just see allowing them to operate inside Israel as a security risk.

The "genocide" is being perpetrated Gaza, not in Israel, yes? So, nothing is stopping them from continuing to report, they just need to relocate their base of operations.
