An invalid stance can be demonstrated to be invalid. There is no need for censorship to safeguard "the truth" (the concept of truth thereby being subject to the biased appreciation of whoever is censoring).

I'm one of the few who appreciate GG's posts.  If you don't like his posts then don't read them.  It's that simple.  Ah, well, perhaps it's just the typical western culture of people sticking their noses in places they don't belong.  That's one of the things I enjoy about Thailand.  They subscribe to a live and let live attitude.  Too many in the west have the attitude that everyone else should "live as I do and be as I am."  And when that's not the case they get irritated and become belligerent.  Which is exactly your response to GG.  He's not your cup of tea so you feel compelled to hound him because he's not your cup of tea.  Whose problem is that?

 

Interestingly, it's the exact same dynamic that operates regarding free speech.  Those who do not think the same are hounded, ridiculed, and censored for thinking differently.  The operative idea is that everyone must think the same; do the same; be the same.  Or else.

 

I'd say you need some time for self reflection and consider some of the ideas you hold.  Perhaps they're not worthy ideas to hold.  Up to you.

Censorship is, in a sense, a protective mechanism.  Different ideas can be interpreted as a threat.  And anything seen as a threat will, often, have a response to counter it.  Truth or not truth really doesn't have anything to do with it.  As I see and understand it.

Hey, I've no problem with you expressing your disagreement.  But do explain how my quoted dialogue leads to the loss of free speech.  I omitted the word 'power' for it's impossible to lose the power of free speech.  It's inherent within us.  You couldn't lose it if you tried.  You can, however, deny it.

AseanNow, or Thaivisa as it was originally known, is decades old.  I joined the forum at the start of 2002, more than 22 years ago. Over the years I have seen the original forum grow and develop, then recede and decline and wither until it is just a shadow of it's former self.  Perhaps we should ask why that has happened. 

 

IMHO, there are 2 reasons:

- The growth of social media means that web-based forums are 'old hat'.  Now it's mostly mobile-based apps, and this forum ease-of-use is 'appalling' when one tries to use it on a mobile device. I know - I've tried!

- The number of trolls, sub-intellect and mentally-ill forum members seems to have increased exponentially since the 'good old days'. They take away the enjoyment of this forum.

 

Apart from that, it's wonderful...

Definitely number 1. Social media has drawn folks away from slow online fora like this... it is old hat now and seems to be a field for boomers to vent. Although TV was streets ahead of this current iteration, it is still relevant. Thaiger ain't a big deal and the op is being typically sensationalist, as 'he' does.

As for social media, it is a choice, at least it is for those not indoctrinated already, this forum is as close as I get to social media. It is informative, interesting and often amusing.

Life is change, never static, it is only better or worse when judging from a past perspective, in reality it is neither, it just is. Many years ago the walz was declared provocative and immoral while later sending millions to their deaths in the trenches was a patriotic duty. Society is generally self correcting, on the heels of 'woke' will come the backlash, nothing too extreme can last longer than a generation the young will initiate change to the outrage of the old.

In my young past I drove cars from Ford, Vauxhall, Leyland etc. and they were often breaking down, 19 years ago I bought a Honda Jazz, I still drive it, rust free and trouble free, it has never let me down, I don't need to be up to my elbows in grease with cut fingers, I'm grateful for progress. I'm also grateful for computers, at the click on the keyboard I have more access to knowledge than a professor 50 years ago.
