If you had one of these, as do I, then you would spend every waking moment in front of it....just CREAMING, from morning to night....

I am sure that you will agree with me on THIS POINT, at least, for once in your life.....

But, I am developing my own software, choosing not to use CSoft, using SUSE.

Anyone here, willing, is welcome to join my project.

Honestly I doubt many people use desktops anymore.

Even sleek laptops are being replaced with smart phones that can do anything a desktop or laptop can do.

Lots of people still use desktops

Mobile phones are great for basic tasks .

If you are retired and just buy Marmite on Shopee or watch youtube then yes i agree a mobile would be perfect.

learned Linux  15 yrs ago so this not news and I didnt discover it cos of you....

but if one sits in front of the computer 24/7/365 they will eventually come upon the secret to a reliable OS.....ur a bit late .....

Late for what?

I began using Linux in the year 2000.

I would have begun using Linux earlier, but it was only in the year 2000 that Linux sent me his testimonial of encouragement.

I trust anyone who works full-time in pajamas.

WOW....I say.....WOW!

You actually spout the truth, the truth that all SHOULD know....by now.....

Yes, this is one of the BEST comments I have read on TV....in many months.

In fact....as time goes by (or should I say: as time has gone by, and passes on).....there is less and less offered by Windows that Linux cannot offer better, based on a far better OS.

Your prescient and valid comment is nothing but further refreshment to mine ears.

THIS is the MAIN reason that.....a few months ago.....

I decided to FINALLY and FOREVER shuck and shun Windows.....Forever, and Forever, til Kingdom Come.....

There is REALLY nothing that I cannot do, these days, for my work, using Linux...and so.....

It's, for me, these days......

Bye, Bye, Windows.....

And, you can even think of my thinking in another more musical way, if you will....

No more Monopolists for Me, I say!

Still, I do love the humor of Gates, even though it destroyed so such.

You cannot stifle technology, as Gates did, without hurting millions.

No wonder he builds huge Armageddon-proof bunkers under his magnificent residences.

Give me Linux, any day.

I loath Gates and his vile windows, but, like millions, it is something I've always used, and it's just not worth trying to learn something else at my age. It's not like I'll be around much longer. Perhaps I'll just give up computers altogether and do something more worthwhile with my remaining time, like watching grass grow.

Frankly, knowing what I know now, if I could I'd go back in time and slap myself whenever I thought it was a good idea to buy a computer. I know a guy my age never had a computer, and never wants one- he is the more intelligent one IMO.

I don't know why you bring Whinehouse into a discussion about computers, but I regard her with as much affection as Gates.

Winehouse?

Because, she is a contrarian, and says No, No, No....to Windows and Rehab.

Windows is an addiction.

Maybe some really DO need Rehab to get off of it...

But I do not.

Desktop sales have been falling for years as people use laptops or high end cell phones.

Both are more capable and convienant than your average grandma style desktop taking up space.

"Total shipments of desktops and notebooks rose to 65.3 million units. Shipments of notebooks hit 51.6 million units, up 4% from 2022, while desktop shipments landed at 13.7 million units, declining 1%. For the full year 2023, PC shipments totaled 247 million units, marking a 13% drop compared to 2022."

I don't know a soul, except companies or elderly who still use a desktop.

However, if that's what you enjoy, more power to you.

Perhaps have a friend show you there laptop.  You'll see how much more convienant it is than an antiquated desktop.

Over 9,000 posts would be labor intensive on a cell phone indeed.

Desktops are still cheaper....

Price per Performance.

This is why I will never buy a laptop.

Desktops are also much more versatile.

How many ports can you add onto that piddling little laptop of yours????

Ports?

You should be doing everything wirelessly.

I barely even bother with my laptop.  My Samsung Ultra 24 is more powerful than most PC's and with the Dex app you can use it on any big screen TV.  Your phone is the keyboard and my 82" inch Samsung TV is the moniter.

Kind of the same argument when VCR/cassette tape owners still wouldn't adopt CD's and DVD's.

WHAT?

Are you.....

Have you checked the latest BENCHMARKS....recently?

Can...EVEN YOU.....see the difference in the Android Benchmark between the ...

S24 Ultra, and the

Intel i5-13600K

CPUs???????

Where are your glasses, Man!

I paid only USD330.00 for an i5-13600K, three months ago.

Great Deal, Baby!

Also, why not try hooking up:

a. 68 GBytes of RAM to your measly phone?  Can you FING do THAT?

b.  I have 2 TBytes of SSD  M.2 installed

c. I have 8 TBytes of HDD storage installed

d.  I have TWO flatbed scanners connected

e.  I have FOUR FING 27-inch high-resolution displays connected.

f.  I have 8 audio speakers connected.

g. I have TWO keyboards and TWO mice connected.

h.  I have openSUSE running on this beast.

Clearly, you, Sir, are just a dabbler in the field of computers....IF.....

You think that lousy telephone of yours can, IN ANY WAY, compare with something that any logical person might CALL a computer.....

Yes.

I bought a budget computer...but...

My FING BUDGET COMPUTER....

Is so far ahead of your FING FONE that you just have no clue, Sir.

Or....as you say.....

I could be mistaken?

Take care, Man.....

And enjoy your PHONE LIFE.......

I hate phones, anyway......

Note:  So many people, these days, walking down the street, using their teeny-tiny fingers to click on teeny-tiny keyboards....on their phones...EVENTUALLY....

Get run over by busses,....

While crossing city streets.

But, if this is your bag, Man....

More power to you....!

NOTE:  Actually, a very nice and valid question...

How does one actually compare the compute power of a Samsung phone to an i5 Intel CPU?

Let's start a Topic....

Why not?

Linux is perhaps most useful for people with old macbooks who want equivalents to security patches/updates that Apple refuse to provide (in an attempt to make you buy more of their overpriced computers).

Bit tricky to set up but, as GG says, it's a good challenge for retirees.

Also it's not either / OR as you can have 2 or more OS installed on the same machine

so if there are old Apple apps that you can't do without use that on app BUT use the Linux OS when you need security

For the work I do I could never use a Samsung phone or a laptop but good on you if your happy with a Samsung plugged into a TV.

What works for you at the end of the day.

Takes all kinds to make the world go 'round, I guess.

Different strokes for different folks.

I even heard that CERN will soon be switching from using desktop computers to Samsung Android phones in order to power their research....

Can this be true?

image.png.dca34b995d7603b37c0a39c2bb2771bf.png

Nobody who is serious about anything uses a phone to do anything useful.

Except, maybe text some GF in Pattaya.....

For a date.

Never heard of a phone competing with a desktop, except in the Farang Pub, on TV.

Note:  Even Kwak knows this....and...I know that Kwak is smart, and that he is from HK.....  (just saying)

You say laptops or phones are more capable so you need to ask yourself why companies are not all just using iPhone  or Samsung phones.

Laptops are great while out the office or doing basic tasks but you still can't bear a powerful high end pc for work.

Maybe ask a friend if you have any to show you a high end pc.

I know it's popular with the older generation.

Have you ever tried a laptop, much easier to lug around than a desktop if you ever decide to travel.

I think it's more of a space saving thing along with ease of travel.

If I had the space Id love to have a top of the line desktop.

Be great for the kids and school projects.
