Popular Post webfact Posted June 10, 2024 Popular Post Posted June 10, 2024 More than 80 patients escaped from a drug rehabilitation centre on Koh Sriboya, an island in the southern province of Krabi, over alleged abuses by the Thai authorities. A community leader on Sriboya Island reached out to officers from Khlong Kanan Police Station for assistance, as residents grew concerned about approximately 80 patients who had absconded from a drug rehabilitation centre and congregated at a pier to cross over to the mainland of Krabi. Around 30 police officers and officials from the administrative office promptly responded to the situation. Despite the authorities’ efforts to persuade the patients to return to the rehabilitation centre, they adamantly refused, expressing their desire to reunite with their families at home. One of the escapees told ThaiRath that he and others had to escape because they could no longer bear the abusive behaviour of the officers inside the centre. They were violently punished while some had even died inside the centre. According to the escapees, some patients who fully recovered from drug addiction were not allowed to return home because officers wanted them to help them with their work and take care of others. They could not find a solution to the issue and decided to run away. The Thai authorities dedicated over two hours to persuade the patients to go back to the rehabilitation centre but they remained resolute in their desire to return home. Consequently, everyone was escorted to the Khlong Kanan Police Station to await pickup by their families. It remains undisclosed whether authorities will proceed with further investigations regarding the allegations against the officers at the drug rehabilitation centre. In a related report, more than 200 teenagers escaped from the Klong Gom School’s drug rehabilitation centre in July of 2021. The escape occurred after one of them was beaten to death by an official at the centre. Some families that sent their relatives with drug addiction to rehabilitation centres have come forward to seek justice after their family members mysteriously died in the centres. Some former patients who left rehab centres have also revealed to the public the abusive treatment, lack of food, unhygienic accommodation, and other issues within the rehabilitation centres. by Petch Petpailin Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-10 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe 1 1 5 1
Popular Post SAFETY FIRST Posted June 10, 2024 Popular Post Posted June 10, 2024 Looks like these guys are Muslims. What does Allah say about drugs? Islam forbids the use of any substance not prescribed by a physician and which intoxicates the human body. Islam prohibits all intoxicants, including narcotics, citing multiple texts in the Quran and Hadith (Unlu & Sahin, 2016). Allah won't have those virgins waiting for these infidels. 1 6 3

Yes we know the addicts are self inflicted but that doesn't excuse physical punishment by those entrusted in treating their addiction. I would suggest that it increases their craving for drugs to escape the affects of the abuse. It would seem that these rehabilitation centres are run on military grounds. And we know how military recruits are treated. 3 3 1
Popular Post Purdey Posted June 10, 2024 Popular Post Posted June 10, 2024 If people have died, there should be an investigation. But then, the authorities are likely to insist it's not true. 3 1 1

Doubtful. Well... they might want to investigate to make sure the officers have taken enough of their paid leave. Then after they take some paid leave, reassign them to a more comfortable, lesser know facility where they can continue their "work". I doubt any investigation would go any further than that. 1 1

I would guess escaped is more appropriate as normally at drug rehabilitation centers they would not want you to leave. Some may have been sentenced by the courts to go there. If they had just decided just to leave, I doubt whether the police would have been called. 1

Begs the question why officers are running the rehab centre, are there not doctors, nurses or trained personnel... or is this poor reporting? 1 1 1

A young Thai friend of the family was well into alcohol and maybe drugs. His wife persuaded him to go to a Buddhist rehab centre run by monks. After a week there he was found hanged in the ablutions section. Sometime later there was a newspaper report that another rehab centre run by monks was being investigated for severe abuse of the rehabees. I've always had my suspicions about his death. 1 1

Come to our village in rural Thailand though and the effects of yabaa and amphetamines is apparent hence the need for drug rehabilitation centers although the treatment locally seems better than that offered in the op. 1
