BANGKOK (NNT) - The Airports of Thailand (AOT) announced plans to launch commercial activities to offset an anticipated loss of over 90 million baht due to the reclamation of commercial and office areas at Suvarnabhumi and Phuket International Airports. The changes, effective from July 1, aim to enhance facilities and improve passenger satisfaction.

The move follows recommendations from aviation consultancy firm Skytrax to elevate Suvarnabhumi Airport to meet passengers' expectations and to rank among the world's top 50 airports by 2025 and within the top 20 in the next five years.

AOT will reclaim commercial areas operated by King Power Duty Free and office spaces used by government agencies including the Immigration Bureau, the Thai Customs Department, and the Revenue Department. This will free up approximately 1,097.14 square meters at Suvarnabhumi Airport and about 491.22 square meters at Phuket International Airport.

The reclamation is expected to result in a monthly loss of around 1.01 million baht in office and state property rent and could decrease minimum guarantees for the 2024-2025 contract years at Suvarnabhumi and Phuket airports by approximately 74 million baht and 19 million baht per month, respectively.

To counteract this decline in revenue, AOT has prepared projects to increase income from other commercial activities.

So were these 'agencies' not paying rent ? aka squatting. Why not let them continue and pay rent to AOT ? as with the duty free shops. Maybe its my old age but none of this makes sense to me. This reads like there will be no duty free in the airports or government officials.

So the Immigration Bureau and the Thai Customs Department move outside to the car park ?

They got sick of the ridiculous rates being charged by AOT?

Perhaps when AoT issues its constant stream of self-aggrandizing press releases it can first check to see whether they make sense? Because this one is incomprehensible.

One would think that income from more passenger due to upgraded happiness-level over using the airport would more than compensate the minor loss of 90M baht; "minor" in view of the total revenue from a airports like Suvarnabhumi and Phuket...:whistling:

And that is only approximately to 2 decimal places. Who writes this stuff?

A P6 science class, armed with tape measures and graph paper?

The whole numbers are easy enough to work out, the 2 decimal places, well I always encouraged the children to be creative.

Used to drive the school authorities mad, but they didn't have anyone else to teach maths and science in English - and I got O levels in both( 1974)!

We had loads of fun measuring up the school hall. The best bit was all the " management" popping their heads out of offices like whack a mole, to see what the mad farang was up to now!
