Crane collapse at a Bangkok building site results in two deaths and three injuries

A crane toppled over at a building site in the Soi On Nut 86 area of Bangkok's Prawet district today at around 2.20pm, leading to the death of two people and injuries to three others. The incident was reported by Praram Radio Centre 199 on its official Twitter account.

 

The Prawet Fire and Rescue Station officers reached the site post-notification. They found that the crane, weighing 12 tonnes, was 70 meters long and 20 meters high, had fallen onto a cement truck and a site office. This caused the death of two Thai males and hurt three other individuals who were quickly transported to Sirindhorn Hospital, situated approximately 3.5 kilometers away from the location.

 

Following a thorough inspection of the site, the officers confirmed no additional casualties. The condition of the three injured is still unknown and the incident's cause is currently under investigation.

 

 

Praram Radio Centre 199 later disclosed that the construction location is under the control of New Sky Energy (Bangkok), or NRKBKK. The construction is for the On Nut Waste Disposal Centre, an upcoming facility fitted with an incinerator that would have the capacity to process at least 1,000 tonnes of waste daily for power generation.

 

The project has secured an investment of about 1.3 billion baht and is predicted to be finished within the next two years.

I was visiting a friend in NYC 10 years ago when a crane collapsed at a condo tower construction site half a block from her condo. One person walking on an adjacent sidewalk and the crane operator were killed.  Seeing that massive boom collapsed and straddling the street was a very scary sight.

Subsequent investigation revealed the entire NYC crane inspection department was on the take and faking all their reports.  Many early retirements but AFAIK, nobody did jail time.

Looking at the video I notice something falling from where the boom likely is. Can't see properly because of trees, but if that is what happened, then the crane likely became suddenly unbalanced and it's collapse inevitable.

The injured were transported to Sirindhorn Hospital, with three later discharged and one transfered to a hospital covered by their insurance.

 

The cause of the crane collapse is currently under investigation by the Office of Forensic Science and the Engineering Institute of Thailand.

Ekwaranyu Amrapal, spokesperson for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), stated.

 

“The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration extends its deepest condolences to the injured and the families of the deceased. Assistance and compensation will be provided according to the accident insurance policy of New Sky Energy (Bangkok) Co., Ltd.,”

 

The BMA’s Environment Department has ordered a seven-day suspension of the project to investigate the cause and ensure the safety and readiness of the site. The project, under contract no. SSL.52/2563 dated December 27, 2562, is operated by New Sky Energy (Bangkok) Co., Ltd. The construction supervision is managed by Panya Consultant Co., Ltd., under contract no. SSL.77/2563 dated January 14, 2563.

Yes think you are right, something on the boom side broke off, and is seen falling in the video, I believe that unbalanced the crane and may have caused the counter weights arm to fall, pulling the crane’s concrete base out of the ground, then parts of the boom whip over the upright and smash into the office building.

 

The full incident video shows that the 2 deaths, appear to be the crane operator (blanked out in picture above) who was thrown from the cab and hits the ground next to the cab and a worker in the office building who was crushed by the crane and collapsed building.

This is massively sad, not just for the deaths but for the obvious corruption and that it appears nobody did jail time.

 

In Hong Kong there was a collapse 2 years ago, the project manager, and I think others, are being prosecuted.  One is being charged with manslaughter.  Here's the story - https://www.thestandard.com.hk/section-news/section/4/262476/Manager-faces-manslaughter-charges-over-crane-collapse.  The company involved got banned, and I'm aware that those who own that company are likely to get blacklisted so that can't simply start a new company and start trading again.

 

This doesn't stop industrial accidents in HK, but it certainly concentrates the minds of those involved in construction planning.

“A tragic accident occurred at a construction site for a warehouse in Bang Sao Thong district, Samut Prakan province, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old man. 

 

Police Lieutenant Colonel Worakit Phareung, Deputy Inspector of Bang Sao Thong Police Station, received a report that an individual had fallen from a vehicle and was fatally crushed by its wheels. Rescue workers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation accompanied him to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of a 19-year-old resident of Borabue district, Maha Sarakham province, lying on the concrete ground in front of the under-construction warehouse. He had sustained severe head injuries and other injuries from being run over.

 

A red boom lift was parked nearby, with blood stains on its wheels, alongside a trailer that had transported the boom lift. 

 A 43-year-old truck driver recounted that he had transported the boom lift from the Phraeksa area to the warehouse. Upon arrival, the deceased had been operating the lift, preparing to maneuver it off the back of the trailer. The boom lift was secured by a winch cable and chains. The driver was assisting with the winch to lower the lift, the cable and chains suddenly snapped, causing the lift to lurch. The deceased, who was in the lift's basket and unaware, fell to the ground. At that moment, the boom lift rolled off the trailer, and its wheels fatally crushed his head.

 

A female employee who witnessed the incident corroborated the truck driver's account, stating that the boom lift had rolled off the trailer, leading to the fatal accident.

 

Investigators recorded the incident and evidence, then impounded the boom lift for further examination. The truck driver and witnesses were taken to Bang Sao Thong Police Station for questioning to determine any negligence involved in the accident.”

Thai media update on Bangkok incident on 2 July.

 

“Following the fatal crane collapse at a construction site, Professor Dr. Amorn Pimarnmas, President of the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand, along with officials from Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), conducted an on-site investigation. The inspection took approximately one hour before Professor Dr. Amorn provided a statement to the media.

 

Professor Dr. Amorn explained that the initial investigation revealed that bolts or nuts in the tower crane's end component had come loose, causing the crane to lose stability and collapse. Other parts of the crane did not show any immediate signs of irregularity, but he emphasized the need for a detailed examination by specialists. He estimated that it would take about one month to determine the exact cause of the incident.

 

Following this, Professor Dr. Amorn plans to report the preliminary findings to the Engineering Institute of Thailand. They will consider inviting the engineers who designed the tower crane and the installers to provide information on potential design or assembly errors. He assured that accountability would be established for this incident.

 

In terms of the legal proceedings, Police Colonel Surapong Phutkhao, Superintendent of Prawet Police Station, stated that investigators have already questioned all relevant parties, including workers, the project owner, and the contractor. However, no charges have been filed yet, as they are awaiting the structural assessment results from the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand. Once the investigation is complete, the investigators will consider filing charges accordingly.”
