Red wine and hangovers

Ok That's odd I'm a huge wine drinker with 150 wines in my wine cooler here - never get headaches but I do drink 1.5 liters of water every day.

What is a huge wine drinker? And do you drink every day? Then obviously you would also get less and less chance on a headache in the first place. I am talking about doing a dinner 1-2 times a week and then having easily a bottle of wine, or even 1.5. Im not that tall and only 65KG too but I can drink a lot.

Normal week, for me, is 2 or3 days no alcohol to keep balanced. Other days 1 or 2 bottles of red wine.

It's price thing same with beer, assuming not dehydrated already....if you become a full blown alcoholic they tend to not get hangovers

Yeah well that could still be relative, I mean of course wines here cost more as of taxes bla bla bla. But if it is about what we discussed, one can still try and get the best deal wine, as long it is not from a southern hemisphere origin country.

And you never get any headache at all, not even if you drink 2 bottles of southern hemisphere origin? Is that the same for others? Or only you?

Besides the hangover, I'm also sure it gives me a worse drunk in general, less happy. So for me it is simple; i'll stay away from the cheap ass wine and beer from now on. Better to drink less often and more expensive in that case, saves time, headaches + good for health.

Maybe I'm just lucky as my father, who drank wine daily, never got hangovers, either. To be honest, I don't know, but I'm guessing it's hydration-related.

No it is not. Have you even read the topic so far? I think you miss the entire thing we discussed. For your non hangovers, yeah, that will be a personal thing. I can also drink much more than other people while still walking straight, behaving normal etc. But the hangovers, I do get, when deserved.

However with the wine, often undeserved, it really comes from the specific wine.

No I don't think it is a lot too, it is quite normal in Europe at least. Most farmers in southern france already drink a karaf by lunch time.

BTW I know I need to cut down a bit - my bill this month was 28,000.

I spend that every month on restaurants and drinks. I did erase bar girls from my budget since covid, that's why I have more for food now. 5K a night average X 2 per week.

Ah, girls add another 10/15k minimum—mostly because I date off dating apps, and that usually means dinner and wine, etc. (plus gas money sometimes  wink, wink, say no more)

No, no, no, the cheap wine has nothing to do with taste but TAX. Most boxed wines are fruit wines (it will say it on the box in small print) and they can give you headaches. Rule of thumb: anything under 500, usually, is a fruit wine.

Are grapes not friut?

Pretty obvious really, drink 2 bottles of $40 of red wine, no hangover, drink same amount from a $10 wine cask and wake up like death.

The trick is to find the balance between expensive and rot gut. For me it was about $18 for a bottle of red

20% of juice or wine that is not from grapes. The fruit in this wine could come from pears, apples, pineapples - not grapes.

They are - however, with wine making fruit or not fruit is quite quite so 'binary'.

Fruit wine is wine (fermented beverage) that is made from fruit other than grapes (and apples which is cider).

Regarding hangovers - I now avoid wines from Australia as I found that they gave me a stronger hangover than wines from other regions.

Whether that is down to artificial or natural preservatives or natural components specific to the region is unknown to me - however, I know that Australian wine does have a different impact the following morning.

Rather a laymans view - there is reason why and its more than price...

A $40 wine from Australia could give you more of a hangover than a $10 wine from France.

Thus, region and perhaps even type of grape could have an impact.

Yeah hence I started this topic and we seemed to have found out the why, but somehow most didn't read it but do comment lol.

So it is still fermented to about 11-12% ABV, which is what gets you pi55ed!

I have made some wonderful pineapple wine here.

Cheaper wine definitely gives more of a hangover, can't be just pineapples, pears or apples replacing grapes, must be something innit innit

Reds give me the headache.  I've read it's the higher tannin levels in red vs white

Maybe you had already too much of that cheap wine...

As others have mentioned it the reason are chemicals like sulfur, histamines and so on. And this depends on the tolerance level of the individual. In my personal case I am very careful in drinking wines because since my younger years I do suffer from an allergy against certain natural and also chemical items. A specialist doctor tested the natural items and I am allergic against pollen, dust, grains, grass and others. I have unbelievable horror hangovers from drinking wines which can make me sick for 24 hours. I completely avoid red wines because of that. White wines are better for me. The problem is that this is acumulating in the body, that means maybe the first 2 days I feel okay but on the third day with the same wine I start to have a terrible migraine attack or hangover. Certain wines are tolerated better but it is not always the price range. It is the level of chemicals and it does not matter if they are occurring naturally or not. At least this is my experience.

If you stick to wine that’s about 700 baht a bottle up, it never gives me a hangover. I buy most of my wine from Ray at VinesToVino, I’ve never been there but he’s on Thepprasit Road in Pattaya.  He has excellent knowledge. None of his wines have ever given me a hangover. I recommend using the Vivino app on your phone, scan the wine label in any shop, score 3.9 and above is usually pretty good. The bargain in that shop is Carant an Italian wine which scores 4.4. I have a dedicated room air conditioned 24/7 for my wine, it’s a serious obsession with me.

I was wondering if anyone has the same experiences here with wine: it seems to really depend which one I drink or being served, as well I suppose quality, but the point is I get extreme hangovers from certain wine while I barely notice anything at all from others. This while I am drinking the same quantities, as well I tested it with eating the same type of proper meals before. Anyone more info or ideas?

I am guessing it is just a simple answer: cheap and box wine causes this? I thought the pricing was mainly about the taste, I never thought cheaper wine would be inferior to taste + give you worse hangovers on top.

It's a matter of alcohol and subsequently the amount of (added?) sugar.

Red wine is one of the most common causes for allergic reactions of sensitive people according to my allergy doctor.

Yes but that is again due to the things we discussed earlier too, it is correct that aside from triggering headaches, it is also triggering allergies often, so I read. So people with allergies should in that case then apparently also try to avoid wines from the southern hemisphere origin countries.

Sure tolerance levels and triggering levels are always individual, just as I can drink quite a lot. Maybe I am also just ore sensitive for the histamine specifically, I have no idea, but I do know that even I only had 3-4 glasses of the southern hemisphere origins, I already have a noticable hangover too, just not terrible.

Perhaps it is the combination of both southern hemisphere + lower quality / fruit wines, that really are the worst in that combination. I just stick to the Italian and French wines when I can from now on, they also taste the best.

We already found the most likely answer in this topic earlier, but many who reply seem to not have read it.

We already found the most likely answer in this topic earlier, but many who reply seem to not have read it. The italian wines would be correct as that would be northern hemisphere. 700 per bottle sounds realistic too, as restaurant usually double that making it a 280 baht a glass wine.

That is 10 baht less than I pay at the restaurant I never get a headache from too.
