The Ministry of Transport in Thailand has revealed plans to improve the Bangkok Port, situated in the Khlong Toei district of the city. This confirms that the port won't be moved, as was previously speculated. The upgrade plan will concentrate on vertical expansion, in order to make the best use of the land in its current location.

The Deputy Transport Minister, Manaporn Charoensri, stated that the decision came after an instruction from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. This led to the involvement of the Office of the Council of State (OCS) and the National Economics and Social Development Council (NESDC). Together with the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT), they will research the possibility of building high-rise residential projects for locals living near the port.

The PAT will also look into ways of expanding commercial space to aid the delivery industry while lessening the environmental harm. The proposed improvements include constructing office buildings and mixed-use buildings, and setting up facilities for large cruise ships. This will mainly aim to increase tourism and strengthen the port’s function as a central logistics point along the Chao Phraya River.

The ambitious plan to upgrade Bangkok Port, as stated in the PAT's master plan, is expected to exceed an investment of 100 billion baht. This will be spread across five distinct areas that include administrative spaces, a "smart port," a terminal for cruise ships with related commercial spaces, a sports center with a public park, and areas reserved for future development in the sectors of e-commerce and additional logistics activities.

Speculation.....555

The Bangkok Port will be moved away from the capital in a bid to tackle issues among residents in the Khlong Toei neighbourhood.

According to the Secretariat of the Prime Minister's letter to the Transport Ministry and relevant agencies, the communication followed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin's suggestion during the Cabinet meeting on April 2.

The suggestion aims to ensure efficiency in the port development, which is under the Port Authority of Thailand's supervision, the letter said, adding that it is also in line with the national agenda on dealing with air pollution.

The Transport Ministry and relevant agencies have been ordered to:

• Accelerate the study on the feasibility of moving Bangkok Port, also known as Khlong Toei Port, away from the capital, covering the relocation of nearby oil silos.

• Prepare a plan to develop the Bangkok Port area to tackle issues such as the slum community, traffic jams and air pollution.

"The development should be clear, appropriate and complete as soon as possible based on benefits of Bangkokians," the letter said, adding that relevant agencies must submit progress to the prime minister.
