Middle East Macron's Bold Move: France to Recognise Palestinian State
I have always said, and continue to do so:- "A plague on both your houses!" The world would be a better place if both warring nations simply ceased to be. Along with several of their neighbours. (Preferably, without nuclear fallout). -

Report Monsoon Relief: DSWD Distributes Essential Aid Across Philippines
File photo for reference only In response to recent severe weather, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the Philippines has extended a robust aid package totalling PHP293 million (approximately THB187 million). This significant intervention comes as the nation grapples with the impact of the southwest monsoon and tropical cyclones Crising, Dante, and Emong. Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao of the DSWD’s Disaster Response Management Group announced that these weather disturbances have affected over 1.38 million families, or nearly 5 million individuals, across 5,501 barangays in the country. This widespread impact underscores the urgent need for the swift delivery of relief supplies. In accordance with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to ensure no one is left unaided during such crises, the DSWD has been actively distributing essential supplies. Dumlao stated, "The prompt provision of family food packs (FFPs) and non-food items (NFIs) to communities hit by heavy rainfall and flood will continue in the coming days." To date, the department has distributed 431,722 family food packs and 3,903 ready-to-eat food boxes. Non-food items, vital for sustaining daily living, include blankets, hygiene kits, and water filtration units, which are being provided to those in need. Dumlao highlighted the DSWD's commitment to delivering not just immediate relief but also comprehensive support to lift the spirits of affected communities. She praised the relentless efforts of the so-called "Angels in Red Vests," the disaster frontliners who brave the challenging conditions daily to deliver aid. The department's relief operations are conducted in close coordination with local government units, ensuring that the response is both timely and effective. This cooperative effort is vital in reaching far-flung areas and ensuring no community is overlooked. Since Monday, Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian has been on the ground, visiting evacuation centres to oversee the operations and ensure that the needs of affected families are continuously met. His involvement exemplifies the hands-on approach being taken to manage this crisis effectively. The ongoing relief efforts highlight the DSWD's strategic use of its disaster response resources. By focusing on both immediate relief and ongoing support, the department aims to provide a safety net for those who have been displaced or otherwise impacted by the storms. As the Philippines continues to contend with adverse weather conditions, the resilience and coordination seen in the DSWD’s response efforts stand as a testament to the nation’s commitment to taking care of its people in times of need. Community solidarity and responsive government action are proving crucial in navigating these challenging times. This proactive approach not only meets the immediate needs of those affected but also helps to lay the groundwork for recovery and resilience in the future. Adapted by ASEAN Now from PNA 2025-07-25 -

2025 SSA Form 7162 - "Hello, are you dead yet?" forms.
I subscribe to the adage, "only the paranoid survive," but of course that isn't meant to be taken too seriously. I edited the 2024 form to preserve the bar code, filled in for 2025 and mailed 4 July. It should have been received and logged by now, so I sent Manila an inquiry email yesterday. Got an autoreply but nothing else yet. In the past they sometimes take a week to answer, so I'm jumping the gun here, but I'll keep you posted. I might try the phone number tonight. Certainly it's inconceivable that all expat payments would be cut off, but you have to admit US politics have gone way off the rails this year and except for 2019/2020 the forms have been mailed early June without exception for decades and the various SSA websites do not offer a courtesy explanation. In my eight years of university science I always finished homework early to ensure unanticipated problems didn't cause a problem. I don't appreciate being called paranoid, but being ahead of the ball has always worked for me even though a 3.84 gpa never landed me a decent job. I wasn't able to live well in the states, but here I've lived 20 years like a king without having to work and being bombarded with kiddie porn or crack cocaine. So, if the form does arrive, I'll just send it in again unless Manila confirms the 1st one was received as it has in the past for me and others. Meantime, I expect the form will arrive in the next week or two and won't regret sending it in 4 July since I have way too much free time. So, if the form doesn't arrive by the end of the month you have permission to panic. -
