August 11,  a large herd of more than 40 wild elephants has been spotted walking on roads and entering villages in the Nong Srie Subdistrict and Dan Chumphon Subdistrict of Bo Rai District, Trat, causing widespread concern among local residents.

The incident was first reported by local villagers and military personnel to park rangers from Khlong Kaew Waterfall National Park, who, due to limited manpower, had to rely on volunteers to monitor the situation. The elephants were seen around the Khlong Son Reservoir area and near Soi Saeng Thara in Dan Chumphon Subdistrict. The herd has been roaming the roads for the past two days, prompting fear among residents who are now hesitant to leave their homes.

Some of the elephants are reported to be in musth, a condition that makes them highly aggressive, while others have young calves, increasing the risk of danger. On the evening of August 10, there were concerns that the elephants might move further into the Soi Saeng Thara area, leading to warnings for residents and rubber tappers to be especially cautious.

Residents of Soi Saeng Thara, including Mr. Samran Phansi and Mr. Theerapong Phansi, both 46 years old, reported that several elephants had passed by their homes, feeding on bananas, coconuts, and areca nuts. The elephants' proximity to their homes has left them fearful. Despite regularly informing the authorities, the limited number of officials and the challenging terrain have made it difficult to manage the situation effectively. The local youth volunteer group, comprising both young and older individuals, has been crucial in the monitoring efforts. However, there is a call for increased personnel to ensure the safety of the community.

The situation remains under close watch, with authorities and volunteers working together to prevent any potential harm to the local population.

They are traveling at some considerable speed, in fact one group were reported to have "done a ton" on Soi Saeng Thara.

Motorists are advised to avoid this joke, or treat it as a roundabout!
