Record Number of Migrants Cross the Channel After Pledge to Combat People-Smuggling Gangs

In a stark illustration of the ongoing migration crisis, more than 700 migrants arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel in small boats on Sunday. This figure, totaling 703 people, is the highest recorded since Labour came to power, and marks the third-highest daily total this year. The Home Office data, published on Monday, revealed that these migrants crossed in 11 boats, with an average of 64 people per vessel.

 

Tragically, the perilous journey claimed the lives of two people on Sunday, who died while attempting to cross the Channel in a small boat. Their vessel, still in French waters at the time, sent out a distress signal to the regional coastguard center. Approximately 50 migrants were rescued from the boat by a helicopter and two other vessels. Many of those pulled from the water had suffered "fuel burn injuries," according to the French maritime regional authorities. The survivors were returned to France, where an investigation into the two deaths is now underway.

 

The number of migrants arriving in the UK via small boats in 2024 has now reached a provisional total of 18,342. This represents a 13% increase compared to the same point last year, when 16,170 had crossed. However, it is 3% lower than the number recorded in 2022, which was 18,978 by this time of the year. The highest single-day figure for crossings this year was recorded on June 18, when 882 people made the journey. The second-highest figure, 711, was on May 1—both dates preceding the general election on July 4.

 

In response to the ongoing crisis, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to "smash the gangs" responsible for smuggling migrants across the Channel in small boats. His plan includes the creation of a new Border Security Command, specifically tasked with tackling the organised crime networks involved in people smuggling. Officers within this command will be granted new powers under the Counter Terrorism Act, enabling them to conduct stop and searches at the border, carry out financial investigations, and issue search and seizure warrants targeting organized immigration crime.

 

Since taking office, Sir Keir has also announced an £84 million funding package aimed at African and Middle Eastern countries, in an effort to address the migration crisis "at source." The funding is intended to support health and education initiatives, as well as humanitarian aid, in order to tackle the root causes of migration and reduce the number of people fleeing their homes.

 

A spokesman for the Prime Minister on Monday acknowledged that summer is a "challenging time" for boat crossings and reiterated Sir Keir’s commitment to combating the people-smuggling gangs. "We expect to see increases before we see improvements. It is vital that we work to smash the gangs who are responsible," the spokesman said, emphasizing that this remains one of the government’s top priorities.

 

As the government grapples with the complexities of the migration crisis, the record number of arrivals underscores the urgent need for effective solutions. The creation of the Border Security Command and the allocation of significant funding to affected regions are steps in that direction, but the ongoing challenges suggest that much more will be needed to address this humanitarian issue comprehensively.

LOL. So Starmer considers it is a British responsibility to throw lots of taxpayer money at <deleted> countries to make them the equal of Britain so they will all stay at home. IMO he is either demented or disingenous if he thinks such a major realignment of many countries could even succeed if enough of other people's money is thrown at them and in his lifetime.

Also, he must be taking the michael if he thinks we believe a mere £84 million would make any difference.

Why doesn't he just help the existing force to do that rather than set up a new force with all it's separate operating costs? Typical Labourite thinks other people's money is his to spend as he likes.

During the Conservative government’s tenure, the highest recorded daily crossing of small boat refugees across the English Channel occurred on August 22, 2022, when 1,295 people made the journey in a single day. This remains the highest single-day total since current records began in 2018.

Money.  There is money to be made from the movement of humans.  Contracts for housing them, contracts for feeding them, contracts for imprisoning them when they stab someone.  People make money from this and not just the people smuggling gangs.  

 

Labour won't stop it either, but their goal appears to be destruction of society as we know it rather than greed.

In a landscape littered with cynical, meaningless announcements, slogans and initiatives this is possibly the silliest slogan of them all. 

 

Does the "Blessed Keir" not realise that these "gangs" are based, and operate overseas. The UK has no jurisdiction over them. He can form a raise as many "commands", "task forces" and "special teams" as he likes. They will have no impact.

He is a total idiot. He thinks he is going to solve the country upgrade migration wave in Africa and the Middle East with GBP84m? It didn't help that his Home Secretary posed with a #refugeeswelcome sign, although when asked if they would be welcome to stay with her in her home she was less enthusiastic.

 

Simple solution, we build an enclosure with one end open to the sea and no access to the UK, we then place their boat they arrived in, in the water and when they are ready they can get in it and go back (yes we will refuel it), or they can sit there in then open air until they do.

 

These are not "families fleeing war", they are economic migrants seeking a country upgrade, and we have legal channels for UK citizenship (albeit somewhat lax), where WE not they decide on who comes in.
