A fire completely destroyed the home of an 87-year-old blind woman, identified only as Ms. Sanguan, in Non Som Kob Village, Ban Kaeng Subdistrict, Kaeng Khro District, Chaiyaphum province . Thanks to the quick actions of her neighbours, Ms. Sanguan was rescued from the burning building, narrowly escaping death.

The fire broke out at approximately 09:00 on September 1. Ms. Nantida Phumas, President of the Ban Kaeng Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, was notified of the incident and immediately coordinated with fire departments from Ban Kaeng, Nong Phai, Nong Sang Municipality, and Kaeng Khro Municipality. A total of four fire trucks were dispatched to the scene to battle the blaze.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the two-story wooden house engulfed in flames. Neighbours had already rushed to rescue Ms. Sanguan, who was inside the house at the time. They managed to carry her out just in time, avoiding what could have been a tragic loss of life. It took over an hour for firefighters to bring the fire under control, but by then, the house and all belongings inside were completely destroyed.

Preliminary investigations suggest that an electrical short circuit, likely caused by old and damaged wiring, sparked the fire. A neighbour reported seeing smoke billowing from the second floor of the house before the fire spread rapidly. Ms. Sanguan was home alone at the time, as her three adult children were away working and it was only the timely intervention of the neighbours that saved her life.

Ms. Nantida has reported the incident to district and provincial authorities. She has also called on community leaders to organise assistance for Ms. Sanguan’s family, urging locals to donate necessary items.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

I hope they find her somewhere to live, but blind at 87 should not be living alone.

Alone at the time, not all the time.
